Soccer Saturday: Are Newcastle United A Joke?

Ronaldo Assis de Moreira Analyst IIAugust 9, 2009

“No new owner. No Alan Shearer. No manager in fact. No Michael Owen. No Obafemi Martins. No Mark Viduka. No Sebastien Bassong. No Habib Beye… [so is] Steven Taylor right that Newcastle are a joke?” - Jeff Stelling.

The panel discussed the Toon captain’s depressing forecast in the papers yesterday, making the point that with only a caretaker manager in place and with an owner who is deparate to sell, there is no-one on Tyneside able to hold Steven Taylor accountable for the bad press he brought on the club.

With Taylor coming under criticism from the talking-heads, Tony Cottee butted in to argue “what is Taylor supposed to do,” making the counter-argument that the defender is trying to do something to change the fortunes of the Magpies.

On the likelihood of a sale of Newcastle, Cottee then forecasted that any interested party will wait for the Toon’s price to hit rock-bottom, with the ex-Hammer fearing that the club may be forced into administration in light of their whopping wage bill.
