5 reasons WHY PSU will repeat as Big Ten Football Champions
1) Darryl Clark
Tough, experienced & confident, Clark is the key to the PSU hopes. Built like a LB, his lack of experienced QB back up will probably have coaches keeping him more in the pocket this year, though his legs make a dual threat. He will have to lead his receivers this year instead of relying on the senior group as last year.
2) Defensive Front Seven
Larry Johnson Sr seems to keep reloading the PSU D-Line & the LB corp is talented & deep. Jerome Hayes is back from injury. Newcomer Jack Crawford is a lot of raw talent, (former rugby & BB player from the UK). Leadership from Koroma & Odrick on the line plus AA Sean Lee is back to compliment Navaro Bowman. They will have to play above their heads at times I believe while the secondary grows & gets much needed experience.
3) Running Backs
Evan Royster was the leading ground gainer in the B10 last year. Look for more of the same. He is the kind of back who can just take over the game. Speedster Stephon Green's ankle is healed giving PSU a good one-two punch at the position. Plus a group of talented youngsters are behind them giving PSU a lot of depth as well. Relying on the ground game earlier on will help take some of the pressure of the of the new receiving corp. It obviously will also keep the inexperienced secondary off the field.
PSU plays two of biggest contenders for the crown, (Ohio State & Iowa) @ home. Look for 110,000 plus to be in support each time.
Since joining league play in 1993 OSU has own or shared the title 8xs, Michigan 5xs & PSU is tied for 3rd with Wisconsin & Northwestern with three. But PSU has not won back to back titles. Michigan has won back to back 2xs in the past 16 years. Northwestern & Wisconsin have also won back to back titles. OSU is currently on a streak of winning and/or sharing the title 4 years in a row, (something not done since Michigan did it 5 years in a row from 1988 to 1992). PSU would love to add to the total of number of Big 10 Football titles, get their 1st back to back title & also beat OSU back to back for the first time since joining the B10.
