Warren TwocockCorrespondent IAugust 5, 2009

Reports today indicate that the New Jersey Devils and 40 year old power forward Brendan Shanahan have agreed on terms for a one year contract.

Shanahan notched 14 points in 34 regular season games with the Devils last year, and added three more points in seven playoff contests. This was Shanahan's second stint with New Jersey, who originally drafted him with the second overall pick in the 1987 entry draft.

Shanahan will be starting his 23rd season in the NHL and is currently the leading goal scorer among active players with 656 goals entering play this fall.

Terms of the contract were not immediately announced.
