This slideshow is the first in a series of slideshows that I will be creating comparing some of my favorite players to each other. Beware some of the stuff that you are about to witness may be disturbing to some people who will disagree with me. But, hear me out on what I'm saying. I'm going to compare them to who has the better scoring ability, ball-handling skills, defense, speed, athleticism, who is just the better all-around player and what I think that they could become. Also, I will be comparing Rose and Mayo to other players as well. But, I won't use Mayo and Rose all of the time in my slideshows. Anyway on with the show.
Of course Rose wins this catergory over Mayo. Rose is a gifted play-maker with the handles of Iverson. Ain't too much I can say.
Mayo on the other hand is very good handling the ball but, he is turnover prone. He turns the ball over carelessly. When he's dribbling the ball or attempting a crossover the ball will sometimes just bounce off of his foot and go out of bounds. This is something that he will improve on next season as he is working with Wade, Arenas, and Devin Harris on his handles. But, until then Rose wins this easily.
Mayo in my opinion is much better than Rose. Now before you get upset with me I know what I'm talking about. I've heard comments saying that Mayo isn't quick or athletic enough to guard guys like Rose or Wade etc. In college when Memphis played USC Mayo shut Rose down and held him to 9pts, 2ast, 5 to. Memphis still won the game. Earlier in the NBA season Memphis played Miami. Memphis dominated the game and they were led by Mayo. He shut Wade down and held him to 17 pts on 9 of 27 shooting. Mayo dominated Wade with 29 points on 9 of 19 shooting.
Rose on the other hand often looks lost on defense. He has the potential to become a great defender like Mayo does. He does a good job at staying in front of his defensive assignment but, he isn't always aware of everything that is going on around him.
Mayo wins this catergory.
I believe that on the offensive end Mayo beats Rose. While Rose is better at getting to the rim and finishing Mayo can score from everywhere on the floor. Mayo is a pure scorer in nature. He is so smooth with his playing style that he doesn't have to use speed or his athleticism like LeBron, Wade, or Rose just to score points. Putting the ball in the basket comes naturally for him.
Rose on the other hand lacks alot of the skills that Mayo has. He lacks the jumper of Mayo. I think that he depends on his speed and athleticism too much to score points. When his opponent takes the paint away from him he struggles with his jumper.
Mayo wins this catergory.
The thing that I like about Rose is that he isn't dumb like some rookies in the NBA. He doesn't experiment with a 3 pointer in a game and hurt his team. (Ala Josh Smith) He takes mid-range jumpers and takes the ball right to the hoop whenever he wants. He is more efficient from the floor than Mayo.
Mayo on the other hand is a great shooter. He can score from anywhere on the floor. The issue is that he will take alot of shots that will make me scratch my head.
Rose takes this one.
Rose has freakish athleticism that we don't see very much in Point Guards. He also has unbelievable speed. He has the physical capablities to become the best point guard in the league. (I don't think he will by the way) He could though of course.
OJ Mayo on the other hand is very athletic and he is quick contrary to popular belief. In my mind his playing style is so smooth that he only uses his speed and athleticism when he wants. I've seen games where OJ dunked on 3 Philly players at once. I've seen him split double teams from guys like Eric Gordon, Baron Davis, Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher. And, I know what I'm talking about I have a Grizzlies League Pass. But, his athleticism and speed pales in comparison to Rose.
Rose takes this one.
Rose isn't a in your face leader. He doesn't need to be either. He'd rather lead by example. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. He is the unquestioned leader of the Bulls.
Mayo's situation is alot more complicated. OJ Mayo plays with another great young player on the team by the name of Rudy Gay. It is difficult to say who is the leader of the team. If you've ever seen Mayo's college or HS games then you would know that he is the in your face type of guy. In a game against the Thunder when Rudy decided to take a contested dunk on Durant and got fouled. OJ got in his face and let him know that he was wide open for the shot. After that the Memphis personnel let him have it after the game and Mayo was quiet ever since. Mayo isn't the focal point of the Grizz. Rudy is and that is sad because, Mayo should be the leader.
No disrespect to Rose but he wins on a technicality.
Rose is better than Mayo in the fact that he helped get the mediocre Bulls into the playoffs. Mayo on the other hand is stuck on a team that was awful. Rose won the Rookie of the Year award for a reason. And, Mayo came in second. But, Rose is only marginally better than Mayo. And, the only reason why I don't think that Mayo is better because of his efficiency and his handles.
These two have been compared to each other since High School. Mayo and Rose themselves were each quoted as to saying that they were trying to out peform each other during the season. Mayo even said that they would talk about the things that they were experiencing over the phone during the NBA season. Rose also said that they were always looking at one another's stats during the season. There are alot of videos on YouTube and heated debates on message boards about who is the better player. There are even articles (such as this one) that compare them all of the time. I think this is a budding rivalry between two future superstars. I think that if Mayo's team can get better than this discussion could turn into a CP3 vs. D-Will. LeBron vs. Melo. Maybe even a Magic vs. Bird. That was just wishful thinking on my part.
