Fortuna Dusseldorf 3 - Hamburg 3* (Pens. 1-4) (DFB Pokal, August 3, 2009) A trademark late surge into the box allowed Mladen Petric to get on a 4th minute left wing cross to put Hamburg ahead. The lead didn’t last long as Oliver Fink turned home a low cross at the near post. Fortuna then moved ahead as Jerome Boateng deflected the ball into his own net. Piotr Trochowski equalised for the Bundesliga outfit ten minutes into the second half, and with the game moving into extra time Trochowski claimed his second from the penalty spot. The game had a final twist as with just three seconds left on the clock Andreas Lambertz equalised for the host. Hamburg won the penalties thanks to two saves from keeper Frank Rost.

GAIS 0 - Trelleborg 1 (Allsvenskan, August 3, 2009) After GAIS had dominated the game, Peter Abelsson popped up with a 64th minute header from a set piece to hand Trelleborg victory. Mattias Lindstrom saw red for hosts late on after the striker attempted to punch the ball in the net.
