Thoughts for the day 6 : AFC focus

Chris FarmerCorrespondent IAugust 2, 2009

This is my on going series Thoughts for the Day, wherein I reveal one or more random thoughts per team going through my mind that day. Today's focus is on the AFC.

AFC East

I sure hope the Dolphins utilize rookie QB Pat White. Don't leave a Ferrari in the garage.

I have a love hate relationship with the Patriots. I cheered for them when they were the underdogs, but tire of their continued dominance. Still, their mastery of the league in all facets is a thing of beauty. The New England approach to off season transactions is one of their yearly lessons on how to run a franchise, and this year's crop is no different. Don't be surprised if WR Joey Galloway and RB Fred Taylor end up being key cogs in the Pats' push to the playoffs and beyond.

I am curious to find out how new Jets head coach Rex Ryan handles RB touches and duties this season. There is lots of talent to choose from, but I think Leon Washington is the most dangerous threat and should see even more action out of the backfield.

Speaking of dangerous threats, I'd like to start the official petition right here and now to give Bills' WR Roscoe Parrish more touches, that is if he can stay on the roster. There were trade rumors this Spring.

AFC North...Ravens' RB Ray Rice could be a fantasy steal this year. Good combination of skills, power, speed and a lethal stiff arm.

Can the Bengals' Offense rekindle itself with a healthy Carson Palmer under Center again?

In the Browns' QB competition I have to say its a draw. Derek Anderson seems to have a stronger arm, whereas Brady Quinn is a better game manager. I don't think QB is the biggest question mark however. Eric Mangini's signing on to be the new head coach? Lame choice. Prove me wrong Mangenius.

WR Santonio Holmes finished the year in spectacular fashion for the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. He has always had play maker skills but last season put it all together, and in crunch time no less. I wonder though if second year pro Limas Sweed will take some of his touches? Could be, could also be Hines Ward's he takes instead.

AFC South

It will be interesting to see how Peyton Manning and the Colts respond without Tony Dungy.

Vince Young was MONEY his rookie season with the Titans. Exciting plays, come from behind wins...what happened?

The Texans have enough talent to get to the playoffs. They have play makers at all the skill positions, Matt Schaub, Steve Slaton, Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels. They have some stars on Defense with DeMeco Ryans, Mario Williams, Amobi Okoye and Dunta Robinson. Head Coach Gary Kubiak needs to get them there this year or he might be gone.

Maurice Jones-Drew is one of my favorite RBs in the league right now. Tandems can be more effective than feature backs sometimes, and I wonder if the Jags letting Fred Taylor go will hurt his production?

AFC West

Will the Chargers give LaDainian Tomlinson his usual percentage of touches this year or is it time to hand over the reigns to Mighty Mouse, Darren Sproles?

Chiefs' new Head Coach Todd Haley has proven to be a fiery coach. He lit one under Larry Fitzgerald to help him elevate his game to stardom the past couple of years in Arizona. I hope he has the same effect on Dwayne Bowe.

I like both Kyle Orton's and Eddie Royal's situations for the Broncos this year. I'm just not sure what to expect from Josh McDaniels just yet.

Raiders' seventh year RB Justin Fargas is a decent player but doesn't third year RB Michael Bush have more upside?
