So the big headline of the Red Sox trades was definitely Victor Martinez for a good, young prospect in Justin Masterson and 2 minor leaguers. They also sent 2 minor leaguers to Pittsburgh for Adam LaRoche, whom they traded back to the Braves for first baseman Casey Kotchman. They also dealt Mark Kotsay, who's been from Oakland to Atlanta to Boston and now to Chicago [ AL] for OF Brian Anderson. The Red Sox also dealt Julio Lugo to St. Louis for minor leaguer Chris Duncan. The only problem is that Boston's deals don't sense. They traded for Martinez when they have Jason Varitek. They dealt for Adam LaRoche, said he won't fit there and dealt him to Atlanta for ANOTHER first baseman. They made good deals, but their lineup is already stocked.

Deadline Winner: Phillies
Why:
The Phillies acquired the right to repeat, by acqiring another star pitcher in Cliff Lee, to give the Joe Blanton, Cole Hamels and now Lee to give them the best pitchers in the league. They also acquired star outfielder Ben Francisco.

Deadline Loser: Pirates
Why:
They traded Jack Wilson, Freddy Sanchez, 2 pitchers, Adam LaRoche, and Ian Snell for 9 minor leaguers and 2 major league players. Minor leaguers are needed right now, but Pitt went to far, giving up their whole infield to the Giants, Red Sox, Mariners and Cubs.

Peavy to White Sox

LOS ANGELES, CA - MAY 01: Jake Peavy #44 of the San Diego Padres throws a pitch in the first inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on May 1, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Jeff Gross/Getty Images)

Jake Peavy has finally been dealt to the White Sox, right as the deadline ended. The White Sox gave up 2 young major league and 2 young minor leaguers. Right now, young pitchers are the best players available. The Padres were able to get rid of Peavy, who is on the DL, for 4 young, talented pitchers. The Padres were able to complete the deal this time, since Peavy blocked the deal on May 21. Peavy still leaves the Padres with no star pitchers, but lots of young talent.

Deal winner: Padres
Why: Peavy is getting older, and might not be able to show his same talent in Chicago, while pitching to win the AL Central. San Diego is left with young pitchers, who can show their talent with a better chance of success than Peavy [ including all 4 players]
