MLB, NL Central, NL West, Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants, Lance Berkman, Matt Cain, Preview/Prediction

Brandon Backe will start for the Astros tonight against Matt Cain of the Giants. Backe is 2-4 with a 4.64 ERA and Cain is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA.

Both of these pitchers have had control problems this season. You can expect to see a ton of walks tonight.

Backe is one of the leaders in the NL in walks allowed. He has given up one home run in each of his starts but one this season. He has pitched very well at home, but has a terrible 6.16 ERA on the road.

Lefties are hitting .286 off of Backe and righties are hitting .265.

Cain also has had control issues.  He often does not get any run support and has to pitch a perfect game in order to win.

He has given up five home runs, but only one at home all year.

It is a nice, warm day today in San Francisco, which could help the batters go deep.

The red-hot Astros defeated the Giants last night, 7-3.

Lance Berkman has a groin injury, but said it does not affect his swing. Berkman's homer off Barry Zito tied the game last night.

Gametime tonight is at 7:15pm
