This is not what the Buffalo Bills need right now.
They have a young, up-and-coming team. A wide receiver with character issues will not help team chemistry.
I was sure the Bills management had thoroughly checked into James Hardy's background. Having a gun permit should be a red flag immediately, and something the Bills should have looked further into.
Yes, having a gun is a legal. However, with the recent troubles in the NFL and some of its players owning guns, this type of issue should be examined by every team.
These players are an investment to the team and a team has every right to inquire about everything in a player's life.
Adding a clause into contracts is a great way to make sure that athletes who do own firearms use them in a proper fashion (IE: hunting).
With that said, I would like to know why Hardy even needs a gun.
I hope the Bills don't have their own Chris Henry on their hands now.

Pulling a gun on your dad is a little crazy... But who knows what the situation was. I'm sure he was antagonized.
I don't think having a gun permit is a red flag.. After all it is the legal way to own a gun.. I don't need a gun but I enjoy to shoot them.
I don't really see this as being a huge problem for the Bills. It's just a story for the media that'll die off quickly.

I agree with Dustin, why does having a gun permit throw up a red flag? Because he went to the trouble to even get the permit so that he could legally carry the gun should tell you more about his character than what you are giving him credit for.

I added some more info to make my point more clear. Let me know what you think.

I read your revision. I may be biased, but I can see the need for owning a gun. For example, the town in which I live has a high rate of gun crimes; therefore, guns may be needed for self protection. Owning a gun is a constitutional right, if done so in the right manner. Moreover, not just anyone can get a permit to carry a gun. One has to go through background checks. If you've ever been guilty of a felony your privileges are revoked. I'm not saying that everyone needs to own a gun, but if someone has conducted their life in a decent manner and they want one they have the right to own it.
One last point to this. In Kennesaw, GA a law was passed over two decades ago requiring its citizens to own a gun. Since that time the crime rate has dropped 89%! Why because the criminals know that when they do something stupid, as criminals often do, the person on the other end is going to have a gun. What other city can you go to and know that every person is armed to defend themselves, their family, and their city?
I agree that these players are valuable investments to their team, with millions of dollars spent one each individual. That's why I am prompted by your revision to present the question as to the benefits of mandating in every contract that every NFL player own a gun. That way the NFL is assured and the whole world knows not to pull some stunt or crime against these valuable investments.
That's just my opinion, though possibly biased to some degree. Hope you see my point.

What about Mendenhall? He was mugged and could have used one in self defense. Unfortunately, NFL player's high profile can attract negative attention and who are we to deny them their right to protect themselves? Does owning a gun automatically classify you as someone who be involved in bad situations?
I admit, though, that I don't know about this situation but am just commenting on what I've read here.

Reportedly, Hardy has stated his relationship with his dad has been minimal at worst and strained at best. Without more input from him about what happened; all this is conjecture. But, if he really had to pull or show a pistol then I suggest he retain a great lawyer and get a restraining order. Sounds like a case of the dad (this man, apparently, hasn't been around enough to be called a father) showing up for a 'taste' from his newly rich son !

If Hardy wasn't a Football player we would have nevewr have heard this story on the everday news. Blown way out of porportion. I liked Hardy coming out of college and saw his combine interview. He is a good kid and a good football player.

Hardy will be a great player for the Bills for awhile. I don't think there's anything to worry about with him. He'll get into minor troubles, but nothing that will keep him off the field.

I go to IU and while Hardy did have some character issues his first few years in school, he really cleaned up later thanks to the wisdom and friendship of deceased coach Terry Hoeppner. As a college student, I'm really against the wrong people getting a hold of guns, but I do not believe Hardy is one of them. I think he'll be a responsible owner.
Why is that whenever a white man has a gun, he's a hunter and whenever a black man has a gun, people assume he has character issues?
