NBA, David Stern, Editorial, Open Mic

I don't like David Stern. Here are my top five reasons why:

1. Seattle

The Seattle Sonics are about to move to Oklahoma City. David Stern wants to add more bad talent to the league by expanding and adding five franchises in Europe. Seattle is going to get screwed, because taxpayers don't want to pay up after funding new stadiums for the Seahawks and Mariners.

2. The League is Too Big to Expand

You want to expand five teams into Europe.

Are you serious?

Get rid of the Memphis Grizzles and the Bobcats (sorry MJ), then let the rest of the league draft their players. The result would be deeper competition and more money to each of the remaining teams. And the Knicks could finally be competitive.

3. Buy-Outs

Sam Cassell and PJ Brown had their contracts bought out so they can leave and go play with playoff teams. Cassell hasn't made a field goal in the last two games in Cleveland—he's a stiff. He speaks during interviews as if he is part of the team, but he's a sellout. Shouldn't he have to PAY his OWN contract?

4. Tanking for the Lottery
Under no exceptions in a league trying to create the highest revenue should Dwayne Wade or Michael Redd be sitting during the final games of the season. With hopes to get a higher pick, they are canning the final few games of the season

5. Playoffs
Like baseball, all of the division winners should be granted a playoff birth. After that, you can see a team over .500 like the Warriors  make the playoffs (48-34) and a team like Atlanta in the East (37-45) make the playoffs. This will increase the competition.

Yes, Stern has brought the NBA a global level. But I don't really like him, and without Jordan, he is nothing.

Stern needs to stop wasting time looking at pre-game pyrotechnics and noise.

That's retarded.

I could deal with that, I have yet to graduate college. If there's too much smoke before the games, and Ben Wallace is going to get injured, then tell Ben Wallace that he shouldn't be in the NBA.

Case solved.

Why do you hate David Stern?

  1. The NBA draft lottery was actually created to prevent tanking. I don't like tanking but if you don't have another solution you can't hate David Stern. David has addressed the issue and I'm not sure what else he can do.

As far as the playoff go. Tell Warrior fans to stop cring. I personally like the fact that the East plays the East and the West plays the West until the finals. It adds to the drama and makes sense based on schuduling.

I complete agree with your take on expansion though and Seattle is a f-ing mess. He really dropped the ball.

I also hate David Stern b/c he mirco-manages the league. Its not a freaking kindergarden. Let the players play. He been so obessed with the league's image since "the malace at the palace" that people now pay attention to the league 's image. Remember when Micheal Jordan taunted everyone in the league and no one cared. Its news when people do it now b/c your to dumb to sit on your hands if some lady and Wis might be offended. Let the players play if someone throw a punch or is clearly tring to injury someone take action otherwise understand that your just a laywer with a big title. The show is on the floor.

  2. How are you going to get dumb a$$ american players to play in europe?
Look at what happened when the NBA was in Vancouver.Remember Stevie Francis refusing to go to Vancouver? Vancouver is two hours from Seattle. The NBA players are idiots, they will never relocate to europe.

  3. Surprise--I agree with almost everything you said! I also do not like David Stern, especially after the way he failed to step in last year in the Suns-Spurs series until the Suns stood up for themselves and crossed an arbitrary line. He gets way too much dap.

As far as your actual points, while it might be complicated to have teams from one conference playing in the other (as far as seeding Western teams against the East: do the Warriors play in the East or do you let higher-seeded Western teams choose to play in the East, etc?), it needs to be done. I would just qualify that by saying at least Stern realized he needed to allow a better team to get home court over division winners with a worse record, unlike other sports. And I am not sure Charlotte should be the team to go, but I am not sure there is a better option.

  4. I hate him because
    1. The High School Rule.
Now NBA-ready players are coming to the NCAA for one year and leaving, which turns college basketball into a recruiting contest not a "develop-your-players-and-team-over-the-years" contest.
    2. The Dress Code.
The players should be able to wear whatever they want. Everyone likes throwback jerseys anyway.
    3. That crappy ball he implemented for a short while, which caused injuries and other problems, just so he could make more money.
    4. The ref situation.
Refereeing is out of control. Veteran player favoritism- Its very prevalent. Traveling- players are free to take 3 even 4 steps as long as they shoot after they finish traveling. Flopping- Happens a fair amount. Instead of fining the guilty party, they should just train refs better. Continuation- An absolutely ridiculous rule. Players are getting fouled on the dribble and then taking a few more dribbles and then laying it up. That's not a shooting foul. In addition, this season there have been a few crunch time calls that were corrected later on by the league. Refereeing is a problem. Address it.
    5. The Amare, Boris Diaw thing. That was just a ridiculous judgment call. The NBA rules should only be enforced when appropriate. Plus stepping over a line for a suspension is a ridiculous rule anyway.
