Liverpool’s pre-season continued to tick over nicely as the reserves claimed a narrow 1-0 victory at Cambridge on Tuesday night.

John McMahon’s XI saw summer signing Chris Mavinga make his first start for the club at centre-half, with the defender playing the full 90 minutes alongside Spaniard Daniel Ayala at the heart of the Reds’ defence.

The other noticeable inclusions saw Swedish starlet Alex Kacaniklic also made his first start of pre-season since graduating from the Academy to Melwood, while Icelandic teenager Victor Palsson, who only joined the club in January, was again selected as the captain for the night.

The hero of the night, though, proved to be Argentine starlet Gerardo Bruna, as the former Real Madrid youth player came off the bench and curled home a superb left-footed free-kick from a tight angle.
