I have been to Cedar Point in Ohio, which is the roller coaster capital of the world.  If you don't believe me, just go.  I have never seen so many amazing thrill rides in my life clustered in one clean, easy to navigate, and fun-filled area.

None of the rides compare to the 2008 Chicago Cubs campaign as a Cubs fan, however.

This season has been pretty nuts so far.  Soriano struggles, Wood not closing the door, Fukodome getting off to a 900 MPH start only to cool off and heat back up again, etc...

I understand baseball is a "marathon" and not a sprint, but this is getting nuts.

As of right now, the Cubs are at 22-15 record (as of May 12th at 2:30 central time) and sitting at a tie with the hated St. Louis Cardinals at the top of the NL Central division.  I know this is a long season, but you have to love that the Cubs are yet to get hot and are sitting in first place.

This last week sums up the headline on this article, which hints that the Cubs are America's favorite roller coaster.

The Loveable "Winners" (I hate calling them losers) proceeded to drop two-of-three to the powerhouse (cough cough) Cincinnati Reds, lost 2-of-3 to the Cardinals, and then capped it off with a weekend sweep of the best team in baseball, the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Just when Cubs Nation is thinking reality is setting in, and believing that with Alfonso Soriano hitting leadoff and Kerry Wood closing this Cubs team will never contend in a best-of-five playoff with a team like the Diamondbacks, the Cubs make everyone shake their heads in awe.

So I'm curious to see what part of the track the Cubs are on right now.  They have a fairly easy rest of the month, with series coming up against the Padres, Pirates, Astros, the Pirates again, the Dodgers, and then close out May against the Rockies.

With two series against the Pirates and the way the Cubbies have owned them, at least there are 6 more wins to add to the win column.  None of those teams we play the rest of the month are even worrisome except for the Astros, who have won 8 of their last 10 games.

So sit back, strap into your favorite seat on the Chicago Cubs thrill ride, and see how the track looks at the end of the month.

Hopefully less exciting and with far more consistency, but I think all of Cubs nation will agree that a win is a win.

Go Cubs!

  1. Very well written article Tyler. I agree that a win is a win, but the roller coaster rides you speak of have had too many lows and not enough highs for me over the years which is why I'm more pessimistic by nature when it comes to the Cubs.

    1. Ha! Same boat here. I like to think things are looking up though. I really believe Jim Hendry knows what he's doing. The only major contract he signed that I dissagree with was the Soriano one, but you can't argue with the fact it looked good at the time. We needed CF production. He came in off a 50 HR 40 SB season and was a premier player. It just sucks how every major guy we sign seems to get hurt. KEEP THE FAITH BOB!

  2. Nice job Tyler, this was really funny! Being a die hard fan myself, this is just another trip up and down the roller coaster that is the Cubs! What do you forecast for the month of May? This might make a good future article.....

    1. I just wrote an article on what I forecast for the month of may. I broke it down to where i see all three players in the central (cards, cubs, brewers) sitting and why they are there. Check out the archived articles it is probably 1 week old. Thanks for the comments!!!!

  3. My bad Tyler, I just read it now!

  4. Nice article Tyler! I agree this season has really been a roller coaster ride and it's only May! Oh well, at least after the rough start to the month the Cubs seem to be turning things around. However I don't think they should ever count out any of the teams they play the rest of the month. You have to remember that those Rockies are the reigning National League Champs. Hope the Cubs can keep up the good stats the rest of the year. Keep up the good work. Go Cubs!
