Many people on this website write about their favorite team or other issues in sports.  I have decided to compile an article of my favorite sports uniforms. Some teams decide to change their uniforms to appeal to the fans or to break a curse. Some of my favorites might surprise you because of their controversial color schemes.

For Major League Baseball, this team won't surprise you.  The New York Yankees' uniforms are understandable because their jerseys have not been altered for years. The pinstripes have been emulated by the cross-town Mets, the Chicago Cubs, the White Sox and the Diamondbacks inaugural home jerseys.

The pinstripes are identified with the Yankees, baseball, and most of New York.  When the Yankees were in Japan in 2004 to open their season, they were requested to wear the famous pinstripes.

The Yankees' cap also hasn't changed since the early 20th century when they added their famous interlocking NY. Overall, the Yankees design is simple and still looks great on the field.

The late 1980's and early 1990's in sports came with many new expansion teams (Marlins, Panthers, Jaguars, Hornets) which also meant teams opting to choose teal with their uniforms.  In the NBA, I absolutely love the Charlotte Hornets' jerseys.

Their uniforms had a very interesting color scheme with the teal and purple look.  Their home jerseys were white with the teal writing which really differentiated them from other teams.

Their most interesting jersey though was the purple alternate jersey.  A violet look had really only been done by the Lakers when they moved to Los Angeles.  The Hornets home jersey also sometimes had pinstripes on it.

As from the Yankees, you can see my affinity for pinstripes.  The teal away-jersey was a very vibrant color and recently I purchased an Alonzo Mourning teal jersey.  This jersey was very original in the NBA for that time and was so innovative that the Vancouver Grizzlies decided to use teal as their primary color.

The NFL has had many different types of odd uniforms.  Whether it be the Bronco's orange home jerseys or the early Buccaneers uniforms, teams have tried anything for their uniforms to be noticeable.  But is "noticeable" what defines a great athletic outfit? No; and that's why I like the 49ers jersey from their glory days.

There is something about those caramel-colored pants with the red top and white numbers.  Seeing Joe Montana lead drives against the Bengals in the Super Bowl, those uniforms stood out.  These uniforms are simple, but the colors always make a statement.

The modern-day 49ers uniforms don't exactly do it for me. Their design is too complicated.

In hockey, it was tough to identify a favorite.  Hockey uniforms offer more design options because of the long sleeves.

Powder blue is a favorite color of mine. The Pittsburgh Penguins jerseys that debuted in the 1971-72 season have the powder-blue design.  In the middle it had the Penguins logo which is one of my favorite logos of all time.  It is an interesting-looking logo because the Penguin is holding a hockey stick. This jersey is so much different than any of their other jerseys; therefore, it is very original.

Those are my favorites, feel free to leave your comments.

  1. I agree, the Niner uni's of the 80's are the best ever!

  2. San Diego Chargers Powder Blue

    1. That's the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this article.

  3. In football I prefer a lot of the old school uniforms that generally stay the same but just get modernized a little. Like the 9ers and the Steelers. Relatively the same for a long time now, just modernized. You can't go wrong with a black and gold jersey or that familiar red and gold for the 9ers.

  4. What about the Nuggets powder blue uniforms or the Phoenix Suns uniforms during the 90's?

    1. Dude we get it, you like the Nuggets. Stop nominating them for every damn title in the world.

The only powder blues worth a damn are obviously the San Diego Chargers. Anyone else is just a pretender.

  5. I don't nominate the Nuggets if you actually read my articles, I give them credit where most people don't usually. At times, I may pour it on, but every true fan of a team in any sport does the same thing.

Second of all, I'm also a Chargers fan, and I'm telling you there's no real difference between Denver's and San Diego's powder blue uniforms.

They're both powder blue and yellow with numbers across the chest.

  6. what about the warriors throwbacks? "the city"? those are tight. but yeah i agree that the niners were sick.

  7. All good choices. In baseball, I completely agree with your choice of the yankee uniform, as it is simple but classy, and the pinstripes have become a symbol for the team around the world. In football, my personal fave is the Ravens alternative uniform, the one that is all black with the purple letters and numbers. I also like the Browns uniform, as they're the only team in any major sport with brown as a color as far as I know. Anyway, def a good topic and a good article.

  8. ya the chargers powder blue are very nice.. the "city" golden state one is very nice especially with the trolley cars with the numbers... these were just the ones that came to mind for me

  9. Great article and I agree with most of the comments - The Yankees, Chargers Powder Blue, does anyone remember the Phillies in the 70's mid 80's with their road uniforms, also powder blue.

49ers? Come on - The Raiders and the Cowboys are much better than the Niners. I also liked when the Dolphins would wear their Aqua color jersey...

And let's not forget the old Washington Bullets...classic...

How about some worse ones; Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Rays and those good ole' Montreal Expos...

  10. st louis blues jerseys from the season Gretzky played with them... I also like the NY Rangers jerseys, Chicago Blackhawks, NY Giants white w/ red numbers jersey (awesome), Washington Bullets, Washington Capitals Throwback, Milwaukee Brewers throwback....there are so many amazing old jerseys

  11. Na, the best sports uniform in the world???

See the All Blacks!!! New Zealand rugby team!!! simple- all black strip, no sponsorship, the jersey is too precious!!!

  12. Duh! It's the BOSTON RED SOX - simply the best looking uniform in all of sports, not just baseball.
The simple yet classy RED SOX across the chest with the unique font makes this the best uniform of all. And the numbers on the back are unlike any other style of number you see on any other sports team. Take a close look at the 7 or the 4 on a Red Sox jersey. Classic.
