Could August 15 Be Strikeforce's Unlucky Day?

Nate DoubleAnalyst IJuly 27, 2009

It's not Friday the 13th or even close to being Halloween, but I'm beginning to wonder if the August 15th Strikeforce card might be cursed. The event was packed to the gills with four title fights and has since dropped fighters from every single one except the main event between Gina Carano and Christina "Cyborg" Santos.

First, Alistair Overeem dropped out of his title defense against Fabricio Werdum. Then Joe Riggs suffered from a reaction to some medication and was unable to fight Nick Diaz for the open welterweight belt. Now, Josh Thomson may be out of his lightweight title unification fight against Gilbert Melendez. Thomson cites a leg injury that has affected his training as the reason he may pull out of the fight.

Today, Strikeforce added a Gergard Mousasi and Renato Sobral to their card from the canceled Affliction show, which is something positive. The fight will, reportedly, be for Sobral's light heavyweight belt.

With plenty of time before the scheduled event, I'm advising the remaining fighters on the card to start throwing salt over their shoulders and knocking on wood whenever possible.
