ESPN is reporting a late-breaking rumor that a straight up trade between the Charlotte Bobcats and the New Orleans Hornets is in the "advanced stages." This deal would send often-injured Tyson Chandler to the Bobcats for Emeka Okafor.
In my book, Okafor is a better overall player than Chandler. He has a double-double career average and is younger than Chandler.
He is also more durable.
Even though Bobcat fans see Okafor as often injured, other than his second season, he has missed less than eight games each season.
The Hornets have been trying to deal Chandler, who has had ankle and toe surgeries over the past year, for most of the last calendar year.
Both centers have large contracts with big salary cap implications. Okafor has $63 million remaining on his current contract, which runs through the 2014 season, while Chandler has a $12.25 million cap figure for this year and a $13.2 million figure for the 2010 season.
So, from a contract standpoint, this deal does not make much sense for either team.
If this deal gets consummated, look for other players or other teams to be involved before all is said and done.
