Playing basketball on hardwood flooring requires a different kind of finish then you normally would suspect. The reason that the hardwood flooring on basketball courts look so shiny is because of the Hardwood Floor Finishes they coat on top of it. The key to a gym's basketball court is to keep the slip factor rather rough, as it can become too dangerous if your floor has no friction whatsoever.
If you noticed that in professional basketball courts, you will see a team constantly cleaning the floors that is left by sweat by the players. The reason they do this is because their floor is highly polished in which case the slip factor is at such a level in which water may cause it to become slippery once again.
Though it is good to know that if you are playing basketball on hardwood flooring, it usually does not have to be buffed in as such an extent as to regular hardwood floor courts. In fact usually a simple coat will do the job quick and give the court its upper advantage.
When you watch your next basketball game, notice how the players move on the court. The right kind of polish generate on the court will give them a stride that looks almost as if they were ice skating on their next dunk.
Occassionally you will see a bad polished hardwood floor that was maybe overpolished one too many coats. These usually result in a lot of players slipping on the court.
I believe that these factors truly matter when it comes to the game as any condition is simply a variable.
