Manchester United were crowned Premier League Champions for the 2007/2008 season today at the JJB Stadium. United secured their triumph after a hard fought 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for United shortly before half-time with a penalty that sent goalkeeper Chris Kirkland the wrong way. Wigan were appealing for a penalty themselves shortly before this after Rio Ferdinand clearly handled the ball.
United were put under an immense amount of pressure before Ryan Giggs, who equalled Bobby Charlton's appearance record today, slotted home United's second with just 10 minutes remaining.
United's title rivals, Chelsea, could only manage a 1-1 draw with Bolton at Stamford Bridge. The mood darkened at Stamford Bridge after John Terry was taken off with a suspected broken arm, although at the time of this writing, nothing has been confirmed.
Andriy Schevchenko scored a rare goal to give Chelsea hope, but Matt Taylor shocked the Stamford Bridge crowd with an equaliser shortly before the end.
In today's other games, Manchester City suffered their worst defeat for many years when they were destroyed by Middlesbrough. The final score was 8-1 to Boro. The score at half time was just 2-0 to Boro, but after the break, they went mad. Downing managed to get two goals, while Afonso Alves got his first hat-trick with three great goals.
Johnson, Aliadiere and Rochemback completed the scoring for Boro, while City player Elano got a consolation goal. This result will only compound the rumours that Sven-Goran Eriksson will be sacked at the end of this season.
Birmingham City were relegated today, even though they thrashed Blackburn Rovers 4-1. Cameron Jerome scored two goals but the result was not enough to keep City in the Premier League.
Reading were also relegated today, and they also thrashed Derby County 4-0. For Reading to stay up, they needed four more goals, due to other results. Harper, Kitson, Doyle and Lita got the goals, but Reading fans must now prepare for life in the Championship.
Fulham managed to survive the drop today after winning at Fratton Park against Portsmouth 1-0. A solitary goal from Murphy was enough to ensure that Fulham will spend at least another season in the top flight.
Arsenal finished their season with a 1-0 at Sunderland. They secured victory after a goal from Theo Walcott early on in the first half. Sunderland piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but the Gunners held on for the win.
Tottenham Hotspur lost their final game of the season today against the visiting Liverpool 2-0. The two goals came from Andriy Voronin and Mr. Reliable, Fernando Torres. Tottenham did their best to force a thrilling finish but could not find a goal.
Aston Villa threw away their hopes of fifth place after a 2-2 draw with West Ham at Upton Park. Nolberto Solano gave the Hammers the lead after eight minutes, but Ashley Young pulled the goal back six minutes later. Gareth Barry then sent Villa into the lead, but Dean Ashton equalised with two minutes left.
Everton secured fifth place after winning 3-1 at Goodison Park. They beat Newcastle United after goals from two goals from Yakubu and another from super defender Joleon Lescott. Michael Owen scored a penalty for United, but if newspaper reports are to be believed, then this could be Kevin Keegan's final game for United.
