World Football, EPL, Manchester United

Manchester United were crowned Premier League Champions for the 2007/2008 season today at the JJB Stadium. United secured their triumph after a hard fought 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for United shortly before half-time with a penalty that sent goalkeeper Chris Kirkland the wrong way. Wigan were appealing for a penalty themselves shortly before this after Rio Ferdinand clearly handled the ball.

United were put under an immense amount of pressure before Ryan Giggs, who equalled Bobby Charlton's appearance record today, slotted home United's second with just 10 minutes remaining.

United's title rivals, Chelsea, could only manage a 1-1 draw with Bolton at Stamford Bridge. The mood darkened at Stamford Bridge after John Terry was taken off with a suspected broken arm, although at the time of this writing, nothing has been confirmed.

Andriy Schevchenko scored a rare goal to give Chelsea hope, but Matt Taylor shocked the Stamford Bridge crowd with an equaliser shortly before the end.

In today's other games, Manchester City suffered their worst defeat for many years when they were destroyed by Middlesbrough. The final score was 8-1 to Boro. The score at half time was just 2-0 to Boro, but after the break, they went mad. Downing managed to get two goals, while Afonso Alves got his first hat-trick with three great goals.

Johnson, Aliadiere and Rochemback completed the scoring for Boro, while City player Elano got a consolation goal. This result will only compound the rumours that Sven-Goran Eriksson will be sacked at the end of this season.

Birmingham City were relegated today, even though they thrashed Blackburn Rovers 4-1. Cameron Jerome scored two goals but the result was not enough to keep City in the Premier League.

Reading were also relegated today, and they also thrashed Derby County 4-0. For Reading to stay up, they needed four more goals, due to other results. Harper, Kitson, Doyle and Lita got the goals, but Reading fans must now prepare for life in the Championship.

Fulham managed to survive the drop today after winning at Fratton Park against Portsmouth 1-0. A solitary goal from Murphy was enough to ensure that Fulham will spend at least another season in the top flight.

Arsenal finished their season with a 1-0 at Sunderland. They secured victory after a goal from Theo Walcott early on in the first half. Sunderland piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but the Gunners held on for the win.

Tottenham Hotspur lost their final game of the season today against the visiting Liverpool 2-0. The two goals came from Andriy Voronin and Mr. Reliable, Fernando Torres. Tottenham did their best to force a thrilling finish but could not find a goal.

Aston Villa threw away their hopes of fifth place after a 2-2 draw with West Ham at Upton Park. Nolberto Solano gave the Hammers the lead after eight minutes, but Ashley Young pulled the goal back six minutes later. Gareth Barry then sent Villa into the lead, but Dean Ashton equalised with two minutes left.

Everton secured fifth place after winning 3-1 at Goodison Park. They beat Newcastle United after goals from two goals from Yakubu and another from super defender Joleon Lescott. Michael Owen scored a penalty for United, but if newspaper reports are to be believed, then this could be Kevin Keegan's final game for United.

Congratulations to Manchester United, Premier League Champions 2007/2008.

  1. Enjoyable read mate. Gutted for Birmingham.

    1. Thanks. I was hoping Birmingham would stay up, especially after the way they beat Blackburn.

  2. I was at Stamford Bridge today. Im not trying to sound bitter but Bolton wouldnt have equalised had United not scored their second goal. News filtered through that they doubled their lead with 8 minutes to go. Chelsea sort of took the foot off the gas, knowing Wigan would never come back from that.

Most Chelsea fans I spoke to today went into the game knowing that our best chance at silverware was Mosqow and I SALUTE the Chelsea players for pushing United all the way. It was absolutely GRIPPING with both scores at 1-0... Anything could have happened but credit to United, they stayed calm even AFTER news filtered through that we had taken the lead too...

Congrats to United, they utterly deserved it. Although one moment i absolutely LOVED was Sir Alex's expression when Bent's header went marginally over the bar with the score 1-0 -- PRICELESS...

One thing I wonder though - Rio Ferdinand handballed the ball. He clearly moved towards the ball but the ref waved carry on.. I found that strange.....

    1. I found the handball strange aswell. I was amazed when Bolton equalised, but as I said in my predictions, you never take your foot off the gas, because the fans desrve better.

    2. There was a handball at the other end not given for United too. Infact, the Wigan player hit it off Wayne Rooneys arm with his own arm......swings and roundabouts.

    3. It could be, I havent seen that. I havent the full United game but I will sometime. It was just a minor detail of the game that I noticed. There wasnt even any Wigan players claiming it anyway..

United played a decent game alhough they werent Vintage. Wigan didnt pose a great deal, a lot less than what Bolton were doing at Chelsea...

  3. GLORY GLORY MANUTD !!! GLORY GLORY MANUTD and we're MARCHING ON !!!!

    WOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EPL 2007/08 CHAMPIONS !!!!

    we're gnnna WHOOP CHELSEA's ASS on 22nd !

    1. My sentiments exactly lol.

    2. Absolutely deserving victory......

  4. Man Utd deserved the win and the title. they were the only team who performed the whole season. Regualrly scoring and keeping a lot of clean sheet. Chelsea came back at the end of the season(all credit to them for not giving up) and arsenal of cause who got left behind nearing the end (after leading the epl for most of the season). The best team won in the end. And the big goal differance man u enjoyed, didn't even matter in the end with Chelsea only managing a 1-1 draw.

Now with chelsea loosing at Stamford Bridge. i can't see how they are going to Moscow with good expectations. But it should be a good match between Chelsea and Man U. Both sides are one of the best teams in the world. and with them in the final you can expect a great match

  5. Well, they didn't lose at stamford bridge, they lost the title yes but they didn't lose. For me, Chelsea only came back the way they did because of United losing the odd game or drawing the odd game. Had we have played better on some occasions, the title would have been wrapped up by now.
