Every Houston fan knows that this is a make or break season.

Either make the playoffs, or something (or someone) is going to break.

But even before the season, there are many underlying issues and storylines that will be looked at before and during the preseason.

The Texans get coverage about as often as curling, so just about any storyline goes unnoticed by the mainstream media.

However, I'm going to cover six storylines that even the most dedicated fans of the Texans don't always think about.

Let's get started, shall we?

6. How Will the Defense Look under Frank Bush?

Many fans forget that there's a new defensive coordinator in town, although he's not new to the organization.

He's Frank Bush, and he's preaching an aggressive defense that emphasizes getting up the field and attacking the offense.

Bush doesn't lack experience, as it's his 19th year in the NFL, his 3rd with the Texans.

For the Texans, the preseason is a great time to see how the newly run defense will look. In the past few seasons, the defense under former defensive coordinator Richard Smith has looked porous and lackadaisical.

The hope is that Bush can light a fire under the young defense in Houston.

5. Will Vonta Leach's Assault Charge Be a Distraction?

The Texans have been known as a "no crap" organization.

By that, I mean they don't take any crap from players concerning off the field issues.

Vonta Leach was recently charged with assault, and scheduled to appear in court on August 18th.

While he won't lose his job, he could fall into the doghouse, depending on how the coaching staff handles it.

Based on the information given so far, it seems as though Leach won't be in any serious trouble.

4. Who Will Play DT Alongside Amobi Okoye?

Most people think of Mario Williams when discussing the defensive line of Houston.

True, he's a heck of a player, but there are three other guys on that line as well. Two of them we know, being Amobi Okoye and the newly acquired Antonio Smith.

Who will be the last one to fill the spot?

There's three people that could fill it:

Travis Johnson, DelJuan Robinson, and Frank Okam (pictured).

Johnson was Houston's first round selection in 2005, and has widely been considered to be a bust. His time in Houston could be dwindling, especially if he doesn't win the starting spot.

Robinson came on strong at the end of the last year. A relative unknown, Robinson likely has the inside edge to win the job as of right now.

Finally, Frank Okam, my favorite out of the three. Okam, drafted out of Texas, was considered a first round selection before his senior season. The Texans snagged him in the 5th Round of the 2008 Draft, and if he can get his act together, he could win the job.

3. Which QB Will Back-up Matt Schaub?

The Texans signed two veteran QBs this off-season—Dan Orlovsky and Rex Grossman (pictured)—both of whom are not known for being tremendously talented.

Orlovsky is remembered for running out of the end zone for a safety, while "Sexy Rexy" is known for being a below average QB, even while making it to the Super Bowl.

Orlovsky will likely make the team because of the contract he was given, but the competition will be interesting. Both could make the team, but I don't see it happening.

2. Who Will Step Up in the Secondary?

Let's face it: someone has to start at CB. Houston has Dunta Robinson, but even he hasn't returned to his pre-injury form.

Fred Bennett (pictured) showed glimpses of being a stud corner in his rookie year, but faded off last season. If he plays well in the preseason, he could get some time.

Jacques Reeves stepped up last season, so expect to see him playing as well.

At safety, Eugene Wilson likely has a starting spot. As for the other safety position, it's a toss-up. Nick Ferguson, Brandon Harrison, and Dominique Barber will be competing for it.

1. Who Will Help Steve Slaton?

If you thought the depth in the secondary was bad, you're going to hate hearing this.

The depth behind Steve Slaton is even worse.

Chris Brown (pictured) is the best bet to help out Slaton, but he didn't play at all last season, so he's a wild card. Ryan Moats could also play a small role, but don't expect too much.

Undrafted rookies Arian Foster and Jeremiah Johnson could make the team, but likely won't do much more than that.

Most people seem to worry about Steve Slaton, and whether he can last an entire season.

If he can't last the entire season, don't just worry.

Pray.
