Cubs-Diamondbacks: Chicago wins 7-2

The Cubs beat the Diamondbacks Saturday by the score of 7-2. The Cubs were led by Alfonso Soriano, who went 4-for-5 with an RBI; and Kosuke Fukudome, who went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the seventh to give the Cubs a commanding lead.

Ryan Dempster pitched six solid innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out seven and walking three. Scott Eyre, however, took the win. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning before the Cubs scored six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Max Scherzer put in six innings for the Diamondbacks, allowing just one unearned run on five hits while striking out six. Chad Qualls took the loss as he allowed four earned runs on just four hits.

As for the Diamondbacks scoring, they came up with their first run in the sixth inning when Justin Upton walked with the bases loaded to score Augie Ojeda. Their second run scored when Mark Reynolds grounded out to score Stephen Drew.

The Cubs scored their first run in the third off a Ryan Theriot single, while Soriano scored on a throwing error. They did not score until the seventh inning. 

Daryle Ward singled in Mark DeRosa, and Alfonso Soriano doubled in Jason Marquis. Then, Theriot singled in Soriano and Aramis Ramirez singled in Theriot.

The final runs came off the bat of Fukudome who hit the homer to give the Cubs a 7-2 lead.

With the win, the Cubs are now 21-15 and sit one game behind the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cubs will look to finish off the sweep today, as they send Carlos Zambrano to the mound against Randy Johnson. Game time is set for 1:20 p.m. Central Time.

  1. I hope they get the game in today. Weather is pretty bad.
