When Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao square off for there much anticipated date with destiny on Nov 14 Cotto's 147 welterweight alphabet title belt won't be at stake.
With this news, Cotto, puts an end to Pacquiao's journey toward an unprecedented seventh title belt; one he may have added to his already well stocked collection.
"I don't even care if there'll be no title at stake. What's important, he said, is for the people to see a great fight between the two great fighters."
"Nobody in the US cares about the title," said Arum, adding that it's going to be a 12-round battle just the same at the 17,000-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
He is set to make the biggest purse of his career, so why in hell would he cut 400 grand off the top, it wouldn't make sense.
Attempting to to fathom the inner workings of these alphabet bodies is like attemting to solve the Rubik's Cube, it's a task which I abandoned years ago.
You will never see this writer refer to any of them by name in any of my articles.
Pacquiao is The Ring Magazine unified 140 lb champion, and Miguel Cotto is the No.2 ranked fighter at 147.
That's as complicated as I intend to make it.
That being said, as crooked as some of these organizations are, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if some belt or other ended up being on the line anyhow.
There are many alphabet boys other than the one in question, so don't be surprised if they allow Pacquiao to fight for the belt against the wishes of Cotto.
Nothing they do surprises me.
