There's a song by country singer Toby Keith; it's funny as hell, and the hook, or chorus, goes something like this:
"I ain't as good as I once was, my how the years have flown; but there was a time back in my prime, when I could really hold my own."
"I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was."
Roy Jones Jr. doesn't sing Country Jams, yet every word has a country flavor. In his self promoting Rap/Hip-Hop videos, there exists a back-woods Florida twang and rhythm that only Jones can emit.
Go ahead and say that he is years past his prime, but the former eight-time champion can still put on a boxing show that is well worth the price-tag.
His MMA/boxing promotion entitled "March Badness" put up some decent numbers.
Very much similar to Muhammad Ali before him and Floyd Mayweather Jr. of today, he also emphasises the entertainment aspect of the sport.
“I enjoy the business of entertaining. I’m in this business because it’s what God blessed me to do. I love doing this.”
And say what you will, but the 40 year old Jones not only talks the talk, he also walks the walk.
Yes, that's right, unlike David Haye and many others these days—who have questionable reasons for not showing up—the dog didn't eat Roy Jones Jr's homework, he is more than ready to go at it again.
Jones is headed back to the ring on Aug. 15, taking on former super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy at the Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss.
Jones says his dream is to once more work his his way back to the top, proving to himself and others that he can still win a championship, even if it demands he go all the way back up to heavyweight.
"If you got a decent name and you're legitimate, that's all it takes," Jones said. "I don't care what weight you are, just say when and where and I'll be there."
There is no doubt in this writers mind that he means what he says.
Just ask John Ruiz.
First things first however, he needs this win against Lacy.
He may indeed be thinking about the boxing summit, however, this upcoming fight may prove something to the aging warrior.
Which is, that his dream is an incredibly high mountain, one than he no longer has the tools to scale.
