Why Is Ryan Mallett Still Making Local News?

I've said it before. I'll say it again. Do we really care what is going on with Ryan Mallett?

The Detroit Free Press continues to report on his progress at Arkansas, as if we care. Mallett chose to leave the program and go to another school. He is no longer a Wolverine. His relevance to Detroit and Michigan sports is zero.

It's one thing if the kid is a local, home-grown product who has won over the hearts and minds of the Michigan faithful. But Mallett hasn't done that. The last time he wore a Michigan jersey on the field was almost two years ago.

Do we really care about Arkansas football? Do we really care what Bobby Petrino says about Ryan's love for Arkansas football? Do we care that Ryan lost 25 pounds?

I'm not quite sure why Mark Snyder sees it fit to continue to report on Ryan Mallett. My belief is that he thinks it is newsworthy because Mallett was probably the most high-profile recruit to leave the program since Coach Rodriguez's arrival. And he's likely to have success at Arkansas. Maybe lots of it.

But it's no surprise to anyone who understands Rich Rodriguez's system that it was the right move for Mallett and for the Michigan program. Mallett run right? Mallett fake handoff draw up the middle? Mallett option pitch?

C'mon. This is a dead story and has been for over a year. Will the Freep run similar stories about other players who have decided the new team was not for them? Will we be hearing about Kurt Wermers weight gain and loss for the next four years?

I think it's probably time for the Freep to heed Coach Rodriguez's motto: "I only talk about players who play for Michigan."
