MLB, Seattle Mariners, Ken Griffey Jr.

One thing you have to love about baseball is how the rumors never stop. There are always players wanting to be traded, and owners wanting to trade players. Let's dive right in to the latest rumors coming out of the MLB:

Ken Griffey Jr.

Seattle Mariners president Chuck Armstrong certainly created a firestorm of media attention when he spoke about Griffey Jr. earlier this week:

"I think everyone in Seattle would like to see him retire in a Mariners uniform. He was born a Mariner, and I'd like to see him finish up as a Mariner."

However, on Wednesday, the ballclub denied that they have any imminent plans to add the future Hall of Famer. A team spokesman said Armstrong was merely being sentimental.

Jacque Jones

Jones was released by the Detroit Tigers on Monday, and he is drawing interest from around the league.

Both the Florida Marlins and San Diego Padres have had difficulty getting production out of centerfield. Jones is certainly sparking interest from those teams.

David Wells

While the struggles of the Yankees' rotation are common knowledge, not everyone knows that the almost-45-year-old David Wells is lobbying for the job.

It's not often that a pitcher can still be in the big leagues 10 years after his perfect game, but David Wells may just have that chance.

Next Saturday is the 10-year anniversary of his perfect game against the Twins. Wells said that he hopes the gift he receives is a new Yankees contract.

  1. It would be nice to see Junior end in Seattle, plus he could DH which would add a few years to his career.

David Wells is still pitching!?! He's a left-handed pitcher and they always seem to find and keep jobs no matter the age (see Jamie Moyer).

  2. Problem is, a trade for Junior makes no fucking sense for Seattle right now. They're not contending for shit, so why take on his salary when they can just go after him in free agency. The Reds need to trade his ass to a contender so maybe they'll take on his salary for the rest of the year and save Cincinnati some money.

  3. Man, I really, really, REALLY want to see Griffey as a Mariner again.

  4. He may have been a Mariner and people want to see him go out as one, but one cannot forget the fact that his dad, Ken Griffey, Sr., wore a Reds uniform. It's a strong pull to try to end up wearing the same jersey your dad wore. I hope he stays in Cincinnati, where he will hit No. 600.

  5. I agree, Seattle trading for KGriffey really wouldnt make any sense. The Mariners and the Reds will contend for nothing this season and the trade wouldnt really benefit either ball-club.

    1. I'm going to have to disagree. I think it would greatly benefit the Reds, if they could get someone to bite for Griffey.

Griffey is 38 years old, and Cincinnati could potentially get quite a bit of young talent for him if they traded him now. Any young talent that the Reds could load their already good farm system with is a good thing for them.

    2. While I agree it would benefit the Reds to get rid of his overpriced contract ASAP, they will not and cannot get anything of value in return for him. Who in their right mind will give up actual prospects for an overpaid 38 year-old guy that will be a free agent after this year? If anyone is willing to take his salary on for the rest of 2008, they need to trade him because it's the best deal they'll get.

    3. Great point. I was assuming that they could find someone to bite, which I don't think they will.
