Science Hill girls finished second to Jacqueline Coward and the Knox West favorites, while the D-B girls were a solid third and the D-B boys placed six out of 25 teams.
"We qualified about everyone we expected to,'' said D-B coach Bob Bingham. "And we set school records in the girls' 4x100 and 4x200 relays. We also won the 4x800 girls' relay and our team there has a real good chance. So do the boys' 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.
"In the past, we have qualified some teams that were just happy to be going. This year, we have some teams that stand a good chance of qualifying in the prelims and getting into the medal round.''
The D-B 4x100 team of Abbie Cooper, Olivia Lawniczak, Darah Karst and Tori Head finished second to Knox West, but set a school record with a 48.97 and the same four turned in a school-record 1:44.22 in the 4x200 relay where they were also second to a Knox West team that set a meet record with a time of 1:42.59. That broke the record of 1:43.46 set in 1998 by Oak Ridge.
Head, in addition to qualifying in the two relay events, also made state in the 200 dash where she was third in 26.25 and in the long jump, where she turned in a second-place finish in 17-feet, 2.5 inches.
Brit Brewster also qualified in multiple events. She set a school record in the triple jump with a leap of 34-9 that placed her fourth and qualified her for state, was second in the hurdles with a 15.7 and qualified for state in the pole vault, despite a sub-par 8-6 effort that was good enough for third.
Science Hill's Lexie Burley was second in the triple jump with a 35-2 effort.
The D-B team of Laura Loveless, Lauren Hubbard, Olivia Lawniczak and Olivia Loveless won the 4x800 in 9 :47.27.
"It wasn't a school record, but they should have a shot at setting a school record at state,'' said Bingham. "Olivia Loveless is just a freshman and there is no telling how good she can be. She is really talented.''
The Science Hill girls also got some great efforts, including a double in the 1600 and 3200 by Allie Scalf. She ran a 5:14.0 to win the 1600 and an 11:23.23 to win the 3200.
Hannah Bowers of Science Hill won the 400 dash in 56.85, was fourth in the 100 dash at 12.5 and ran leg on the 4x400 relay team where the Lady Hilltoppers finished second but were one of three teams to best the previous Section I record in the event. Maryville set a state record with a time of 3:53.86. Science Hill also placed second to D-B in the 4x800 Relay.
Kayla Kuziola won the 800 Run in 2:21.94 and also qualified for state by placing fourth in the Girls 100 Hurdles in 16.36. Science Hill's Jasmine Foster was a winner in the shot put with a 39-8 effort and qualified third in the discus with a throw of 121-3.
Tennessee High placed 1-2 in the girls' pole vault with Emily Morin winning in 9-0 and Brittany Linkous placing second in 8-6. Boone's Brittaney Johnson was third in the high jump with a 5-0 effort.
The D-B boys had a winner in the 100 dash in Adrian Sensabaugh. He also ran legs of the 4x100 relay team that was second in 43.08 and the 4x200 relay team that won in 1:29.26 and chopped a second off its best time of the year.
Injured Josh Vasquez also did enough to return to state.
He placed fourth in the 1600 run with a 4:35.03.
"He has one good leg and the other about 50 percent,'' said Bingham. "He gutted it out and drug his other leg the last two laps. But he has another two weeks to get healthy.''
Sullivan South's Houston Martin qualified in the 400 dash with a time of 51.19 that placed him fourth.
Science Hill's Adrian Hill won the triple jump in 44-1.75 and was second in the long jump in 21-8.75, while Boone's Chris Winkle was third in the pole vault at 11-6. Sullivan East's Kyle Barnes qualified in the shot put with a 48-9.75 that placed him second, and also made state in the discus with a throw of 138-6 that earned him a fourth-place finish. Teammate Preston Frye advanced in the shot put where he was fourth in 45-9.50 and Science Hill's Bruce Crumley qualifed in the discus with a 139-4 that earned him third place.
Coward, who is nationally ranked, won the 100 dash in 12.0, the 100 hurdles in 14.23 and the 300 hurdles in 41.65 -- a meet record by more than three seconds. The previous best was 44.83 by Maryville's Ellen Wortham, who was second to Coward with a time of 43.65. Diamond Knox of Science Hill also qualified for state witrh a 48.42 in the 300 hurdles.
