In thirty-seven league games, Manchester United has only conceded 22 goals and find themselves 90 minutes away from winning a second consecutive title. The Red Devils are renowned for their potent and effective attacking football, but this season they have established themselves as the country’s best defense.

Wes Brown has been an integral part of a backline which has also helped United earn a place in Moscow for the Champions League Final later this month. The England international is full of praise for his United teammates and believes it’s their superb understanding of each other that has helped make them the league’s supreme defense.

“As a back five we’ve played a lot of games together and when you do that you form an understanding, not just between yourselves, but with the midfield lads as well,” Brown says.

“The back-line this year is one of the most solid defenses I've been part of. Individually we've done well, and as a group we've helped each other and that's shown in our results.”

Manchester United will be hoping to end the season on a high and to ensure they do that, Wes Brown and the rest of United’s defense will need to be at their best. People can say all they want about United’s front line contingency, but if not for their tight-knit defense, the Red Devils would not be on the verge of winning a Premier League and Champions League double.

If Manchester United is going to make this season a successful one, then their defense will have to play its part. Fortunately for Sir Alex Ferguson, he boasts the best defense in the country. So along with his lethal attacking force, Fergie’s troops are more than equipped to land the double.

  1. Player for player Chelseas have a better back line this season but stats don't lie.

  2. So you think the likes of Carvalho, Terry, Cole, and Belletti are better than Brown, Vidic, Ferdinand, and Evra? It's tough to say and I respect your opinion but I just think those four United players I mentioned are the best back four in the prem.

  3. Cole on his day, prob one of the best in the world...Evra just not as good in my opinion. Terry I believe is better than Ferdinand. Vidic is better than Carvalho, maybe but Carvalho has more experience. As for Brown and Belletti two completely dif players playing dif roles.

As I said altogether tho the stats don't lie.

  4. Andrew, the stars wouldn't lie if both sides had been able to field the same defence all season. That clearly wasn't possible for half the season in Chelsea's case because of injuries to Carvalho, JT and of course Cech - Jeff, how you could ignore goalkeepers in your article is baffling!

  5. Gotta agree with Andrew that player for player, Chelsea have the the better players at the back INCLUDING the goal keeper. But stats dont lie and as a collective defence they have performed better this season...
Having said that, Chelsea back four have hardly had any decent run of games toegther...

  6. andrew you maybe right about Cole. But teams and players have thier good and bad games. As you said stats dont lie, and i think because they work better together than chelsea because they are played consistently together. But im not sure about cech as a better keeper they should have a penalty competition.

  7. Even if Chelsea's defense had not been disrupted by injuries it wouldn't change the fact that United DOES HAVE the better defense. And if we're going to talk about goalkeepers too then Van der Sar has been brilliant for United and is another reason why they've kept so many clean sheets.
But I still don't think Cole is neccesarily better than Evra.
