Congratulations are in order for Mr. Brandon Crawford, Ball State University's 32-year old junior defensive end and former military man. He received the Terry Courage Award from the National Football Foundation Central Indiana Chapter.

The award is named after former Indiana University running back Terry Cole and former IU coach Terry Hoeppner.

He received the award for exemplifying courage as a football student-athlete, surely tied to military background. He graduated from Fort Wayne South Side High School in 1996 (only two years before I graduated, yet he's 32 and I'm 27...weird) and in case you aren't familiar with the story, joined the Marine Corps in 1999, where he served until 2003.

He enrolled at Ball State in 2006 and earned a letter that year, along with last season. This past year he was Third-Team All-Mid American Conference. He led the team with 17 tackles for loss and eight sacks.

But the play we'll remember him the most for last season is the blocked field goal at the end of regulation against Navy to force overtime, a game in which we certainly should not have won, but alas, we did anyway. Good times!
