NFL Draft, NFL, AFC East, Buffalo Bills, Marshawn Lynch, 2008 NFL Draft, NCAA Football, Editorial

In the 6th round of the NFL draft the Buffalo Bills made an unexpected pick by taking RB Xavier Omon from Division II North West Missouri State. This is a kid from Nebraska who has worked hard for everything he has received in his short football career. Getting snubbed by Division I schools and then going in the 6th round, while most experts had him to going un-drafted gives Omon an added chip on his shoulder to succeed and prove his doubters wrong.

With Marshawn Lynch taken last year, and establishing himself as solid NFL running back, most did not expect the Bills to take another similar style back.

I think that Omon could be a great compliment to the Bills running game. He is a short bruising back who is 5'10, 228lbs who can keep pounding the defense when Marshawn needs a breather. He does not have great breakaway speed, but does have some impressive power tire out opponents.

In addition, Omon proved to be a RB who has a knack for the end zone in college with his 55 touchdowns on 899 carries in his career.

Being from a DII school will mean that he needs some extra time to adjust to a much higher level of competition, but he can definitely start out as a great goal line back.

The Bills also have Fred Jackson who is their more speedy elusive back who emerged last year when Marshawn Lynch was hurt.

With three running backs age 27 and under, it seems the Bills have definitely established a solid backfield for years to come.

Check out some highlights of Xavier Omon.

  1. really 3 running backs under 27? Apparently us drafting dwayne wright last year doesn't count?

    1. I dont like to respond on my own articles but I read somewhere that the Bills are probably going to use omon in the 3 back rotation and it said that this does not bode well for wright. I am trying to find the source.

      Thanks

That is the link. Yes its a blog but everything makes sense. Drafting another running back proves that the Bills are not 100% on Wright.

As it states in the article, Wright may not make the roster given the amount of running backs the bills currently have.

      Thanks

  2. dwayne wright is solid. we drafted him in the 4th. were not gonna drop him for omon, even as impressive as omon was in a d2 school.

  3. drafting a runningback has nothing to do with them not feeling wright is "right". they just saw great value at the 6th spot. and want to give the d2 star a look

  4. I agree with Gabe. I feel this was a great pick and I can't wait to see Omon run over people.
