The Five Most Overrated Traditions of College Football

#6-10: Lee Corso.
Only five weeks until American men are back to their favorite pastime: gambling.
Gambling on football.
And while Eddie Shore is a huge fan of both the NFL and college ball, today we’re talking college. After all, it was the best 6.5 years of my life.
College ball is great for the tradition, the cheerleaders, the tailgates, and the tradition. And while the tradition is what makes college football great, there are a few things we could shitcan.
Here are Eddie Shore’s top 5 he’d like to 86.
The BCS
We’ll start with the most obvious, and the most annoying. You realize we are almost to a full generation of kids who don’t realize just how shitty the bowl system used to be?
Just because the BCS is better, doesn’t mean it’s good. NCAA, for the 118th time*, if my 2nd grade gymclass can create a playoff in whiffle ball, the logistics can’t be that hard.
Honestly, the government could run this like the TSA and be more efficient.
*one for every airing of the ESPYs
The Jesus Freak Who Stays For Four Years
Nothing against Tim Tebow, or any kid that wants to play four years of college before going out to the real world.
But here’s something against you guys: What are you doing?
On the staying in school side, that’s just a mistake. What made America great is the notion of ‘get what you can, as fast as you can, for as long as you can’.
That’s how this country was made great, that’s how we got into wars, that’s how we ruined the economy, and that’s how we’re gonna destroy the planet.
You find me a downside in that logic. Staying in school to win a championship when you could be making millions for a bad Detroit or Cincy team? Where are your priorities? Grow up.
Oh, and as for the Jesus Freak side. Commendable that you’re not drinking or not sleeping around.
Except I’ll be honest.
College isn’t just about getting overserved and making bad decisions for one night. It’s about doing that for one night, and having a lifetime to enjoy the stories with your buddies.
Less four-year kids who tow the line, the better for all of college football. Don’t believe me? Do you remember the Cane teams from the '80s, or the Youngstown State teams from the '80s.
Case closed.
Day Games
Memo to teams like Michigan, Purdon’t, N. Carolina, or any other schools that ‘frown’ upon night games.
Night games rule. And they’re better for everyone.
They get better ratings. The games usually have a more electric atmosphere. And a later start allows for longer tailgates that start at a more reasonable hour.
It’s a win-win-win.
‘Traditional Powers’ (teams and coaches)
Memo to Nebraska, FSU, or anyone named Holtz: Your 15 minutes ended three years ago.
Eddie Shore is tired of teams getting love because our grandfather saw them go 10-2.
This week Kirk Ferenze made news for signing a new deal at Iowa. Really? Awesome.
Iowa, even on a good year, hasn’t been a legit national power since Ike. And as for coaches, good lord, I have two words: Charlie Weis.
So this guy coaches the Domers. So he won Super Bowls (years ago as an ASSISTANT). Let it go people.
The teams that are good, are good. The teams that are bad, suck, EVEN IF they have history. Until they’re good again, they don’t deserve special treatment.
And Chaz, lose the gym teacher get-up, you’re embarrassing gym teachers. (sweet high pants, maam).
Sideline Reporters
Yes Eddie Shore has seen the Erin Andrews tape. Yes Eddie Shore has met Bonnie Bernstein. Yes Eddie Shore loves eye candy.
But the only thing I want to see on the sideline during the game needs to have short skirts and pom poms (real or fake, I’m pretty open-minded).
You want to slut up the coverage? Add a hot studio host, or have girls in bikinis holding the score. I don’t care what Mack Brown says to anyone at halftime, even if it’s Erin Andrews.
Shorten the game, and make it less stupid.
Did I forget any? Ping me at eddieshore@dbbsports.com. Rick Reilly heckles encouraged.
