American Christian's Tyreke Evans: What Will He Really Do For a Team?

College Basketball, Editorial

Hands down, Tyreke Evans is one of the best scorers in the country. He possesses a scary arsenal of moves, and has displayed a lot of creativity in scoring the basketball. I once got out to see him play, and never had I seen basketball made to look so easy. Tyreke even seemed to be having an off game, but still finished with 33 points, and a win to go along with it.

Not to long ago, I found myself praying Tyreke would stay close to home and attend Villanova. It would have made my season tickets even more valuable.

Then I got to thinking, Evans is an unbelievable talent, but if you've ever watched him play you may take a look and notice his teammates- watching. I realized that if Tyreke wasn't surrounded by other D-1 prospects on his team, American Christian would be getting blown out.

Sure, Tyreke Evans is very fun to watch, but I see a tremendous talent, and that's it. Although he has the ability, he tends to not involve his teammates. If the ball goes to him, odds are its going up, or hes going to dribble around until he gets his shot.

I don't like to say it, and hopefully I am proved wrong, but Tyreke Evans is not the guy you want for TEAM basketball. Don't count of Memphis being a contender next year, count on the Tyreke Evans show. That will still be entertaining, but it's not what you want in the big picture.

Evan's going to Villanova would disrupt a team chemistry that built over the last year, on a team graduation zero players. Memphis is the better fit. The Tigers developed an unorthodox style of play, one that Evan's will fit nicely into.

However, expect 40-50% of the shots coming from Evan's hands.

There is no doubt Tyreke Evans will be a star, but how much will he win? how will he incorporate his teammates? That is what makes the MVP (i.e. Kobe)

  1. This article smacks of sour grapes.

  2. "I don't like to say it, and hopefully I am proved wrong, but Tyreke Evans is not the guy you want for TEAM basketball. Don't count of Memphis being a contender next year, count on the Tyreke Evans show. That will still be entertaining, but it's not what you want in the big picture."

Urrrrggggggghhhhhh...well don't say it then you idiot...would you really think that if he'd chosen Villanova! Hell no...you'd be screaming "FINAL FOUR CONTENDER" just like the other Wildcat fans.

Face it dude, you're a bitter hater, and Memphis will be in the Elite Eight or better for a fourth consecutive year.

  3. Matthew you better hope that Memphis doesn't play Villanova in the NCAA tournament this season. Because newcomers Tyreke Evans, Wesley Witherspoon, along with a host of returnees believe in making believers out of nonbelievers. If Nova can't guard Evans then Cal will allow him to do some damage but Memphis believes in sharing the ball and allowing multiple athletic ball handlers to become playmakers. Nova will try to use those 6'1, 6'0, 6'2 guards against our 6'5', 6'6' 6'8, 6'9 backcourt and you know what will happen. Memphis is here so get down or lay down.

    1. Memphis is losing CDR and Rose and Dorsey, need i say more?? Dont put your hopes on Dozier Anderson and Taggart to step up, they simply shined because Rose makes his teammates better. And dont put your hopes on incoming freshman. Losing Dorsey, your frontcourt is now weaker then Novas. Nova returns every single player (cept malcolm grant, sad). Stokes is coming into his own so look out. The nova guards may be smaller, but they are tougher. So, i do hope Memphis plays Villanova. Until then, i hope Cal has them in the gym working on their free throws.

  4. He is a heck of a talent, but I do agree that he won't get his teammates as involved as they should be. He's a ball hog, and I don't think a coach like Calipari will call him on it.

  5. Memphis will be just fine. They are 104-10 the last 3 seasons. Plus the reason Cal signed a 3 million a year contract is because kids all over want to come to Memphis. He shared today that out of the top 8 kids in the 2009 class Memphis is 1 or 2 on at least 6 of them. Cal will know exactly how to use Evans. You know what Evans already knows that. Cal will work him hard and make him into the player that fits the system. Evans is a great kid. I'm glad he's coming. I live up here in South Jersey. I'm a Memphis alum. I actually really like Nova and Coach Wright. He's a great guy. But don't tell me he didn't want Evans. He put on that last visit to his house because he knows that Evans could have helped Nova to get where Memphis went with Rose. He's not stupid. Jay is a great guy and is also a class guy. It might be hard for Nova guys to accept this, but he is a good friend of Cal's. In fact Larry Brown and Cal and Jay are all friends. He congratulated Cal and Memphis on Evans. Cal would have done the same with him. Nova will be real good and so will Memphis.

  6. I can't wait to see Tyreke in the NBA, he's a great talent.
