Milwaukee acquired second baseman Felipe Lopez from Arizona on Sunday for outfielder Cole Gillespie (Triple-A) and RHP Roque Mercedes (A-Advanced).
Lopez provides a stable solution to the second base and leadoff hitter shuffles that ensued following Rickie Weeks’ season ending injury. The 29-year-old switch hitter has six homers, 25 RBI and a impressive .372 OBP in 85 games this season.
Mercedes, 22, posted a 1.08 ERA in 41 2/3 innings of relief at Brevard County. Gillespie, 25, hit .258 with eight home runs, 36 RBI and 10 steals between his time at Brevard County and Nashville this season. Gillespie seemed to be blocked from advancing to Milwaukee’s outfield.
I feel like Milwaukee landed a player who can do volumes to help address the team’s present problems, and didn’t damage their future in doing so. Lopez will be a free agent following the ‘09 season, and a Type B status wouldn’t be out of the question for the veteran infielder. I like the move.
