Miracle on Ice

The game was unbelievable to watch because of the convergence of several factors: (1) the fact that the Russian team had beaten the NHL All Stars 6-0

I've had many great moments watching sports, but the "Miracle on Ice" hockey game where the ridiculously underdog US team beat the "amateur" (i.e. completely professional) Soviet team in the semi-finals of the 1980 Olympics was the best moment by far. The game was unbelievable to watch because of the convergence of several factors: (1) the fact that the Russian team had beaten the NHL All Stars 6-0 the previous year, making them the overwhelming favorite to win another gold medal; (2) the overall patriotic fervor, of course, of a US-Russian game, played on American ice at Lake Placid; and (3) the fact that the US team came from behind twice and then went ahead 4-3 with 10 minutes to go, leaving every fan screaming for 10 full minutes as the US defense withstood attack after attack to hang on for the win.
