After my recent slide show on the Top 10 Sports Movies of All-Time, I decided to make another slide show about the characters in some of those movies.
I am probably forgetting a bunch, but I have compiled a list of 15.
Some characters are fictional, and some are real life people. Either way, they are a part of this list.
I'm sure you will let me know, without needing a reminder, to list the ones that I have forgotten about.
Go back in time and think about those great sports movies, and think about the characters that remind you of them.
15. Cole Trickle (Days of Thunder)
Days of Thunder is THE Nascar movie out there (sorry Ricky Bobby). The epic duels between Cole and Rowdy Burns are great. If there is any character representing a race car driver, Cole is the guy for this list.
14. Spike Hammersmith (Little Giants)
All the kids know Spike. The big, rough, nasty player for the Cowboys in Little Giants. The villain of the movie, if there ever could be one.
Spike was a favorite for myself, and I can still watch the movie today.
13. Vince Papale (Invincible)
This true story really got people interested in making a movie, and finally they did so.
Mark did a great job of acting in this movie, and the combination of that and the true to life story really made a big impact.
12. Norman Dale (Hoosiers)
Another true story character here. This one hits home (being from Indiana) and has always been a favorite of mine.
Norman Dale is a truly great story of a small time basketball coach looking for another chance. His story has inspired so many coaches out there.
11. Ray Kinsella (Field of Dreams)
Ray built it, and they came.
Every little kid remembers this one growing up, and the magic that it had. This story affected so many young ball players out there to believe, much like Ray did.
10. Boobie Miles (Friday Night Lights)
A truly sad story about Boobie and his bright future turned bad.
When this movie came out, it was all the buzz. Then when people found out the true story, it caught on even more.
The story of Miles' career was heart breaking, and after people started watching the movie again, they became attached to him even more.
9. Herman Boone (Remember the Titans)
Granted, having Denzel as the part of his character in the movie really helped, but Boone was still an iconic figure in the state.
Herman Boone was the kind of coach that everyone wanted. He stole the show in the movie, and really brought everyone together.
Boone's teachings are still being displayed among communities today.
8. Rick
Charlie Sheen fit this character so well. He is one of many great characters in this movie, but according to many, he is the best of them all.
Everyone wanted to be like Wild Thing after this movie came out. Young kids and adults alike, he was definitely a fan favorite.
7. Gordon Bombay (Mighty Ducks)
The fearless leader of the Mighty Ducks. All the kids grew up with this movie (not so much the sequels).
Bombay was a coach and a friend. We knew his story, and we rooted for him the entire way.
6. Bobby Boucher (The Waterboy)
Truly a fun character to watch. Bobby owned this movie, and was the reason everyone wanted to see it.
If there were ever a character like this in real life, every fan would want to see him on the field. Sandler was a great fit for this character, and Boucher is still being quoted today.
5. Paul Crewe (The Longest Yard)
Whether it be the original or the new version, Crewe was a stud. A true bad ass in both movies.
We rooted for him because of his unfair treatment during his time in jail, and we loved how he stuck it to the man in the end. Both versions were great.
4. Crash Davis (Bull Durham)
Not only a great character name, but a really awesome character. Crash is one of the more famous baseball movie characters, which is really saying something.
There have been so many baseball players (Costner loves that role) but none like Crash.
3. Daniel Ruettigere (Rudy)
Of course he would be in the top three. Rudy is the best true story sports drama character out there.
The ultimate underdog. Everyone knows the story of Rudy and his family, and what he did to get on the team.
We all cheered when he finally got to dress for the team, and when he got on the field, it just seemed like a perfect ending for a great character.
2. Jesus Shuttlesworth (He Got Game)
Not just an awesome character name, but an awesome character.
Shuttlesworth had so much going for him, but he also had his family problems. The situation with his dad and where he signed to play college ball was an interesting one. The life of Shuttlesworth on and off the court, were both interesting.
Ray Allen did an awesome job with this character, and is one of my all-time favorite sports movie characters.
1. Rocky Balboa (Rocky)
Well duh. If you didn't already know this was going to be number one, then something is wrong with you.
Pretty much that's it, if you don't know the story of Rocky, well I feel bad for you. Go rent the movies (at least through Rocky III). You will know why he is number one on this list.
