BYU vs Oklahoma: Keys For the Upset
It isn’t too far-fetched to think that Oklahoma will be favored for the inaugural game in the brand new Jerry World. However, one thing we have learned in recent years is that no team is safe when playing one of the best of the non-BCS teams.
Oklahoma should know this better than anyone.
This article is written on the premise that BYU will understandably be the underdog in this game, but that they most definitely have a chance. What follows is a list of things that could help increase the Cougars' likelihood of pulling off the upset.
1. Blitz, stunt, and blitz some more
The most glaring hole on the mighty Sooner offense is the offensive line. They need to be tested early and often.
Even without his top receivers, Heisman winner Sam Bradford will pick apart BYU’s secondary if given the time. BYU’s front seven need to do as much as possible to get into the backfield and force Bradford to throw earlier than he would like or even make a mistake.
2. Establish the running game
This seems an obvious key to winning any game, but it's very important against a team like Oklahoma. The longer Oklahoma’s offense is on the field, the more points they will score. BYU needs to sustain long drives and win the time of possession battle.
Another reason to rely on the running game is that the BYU offensive line is very young. It will be much easier to get them ready to run block than pass protect for the first game of the season.
3. Use the short passing game
Most of BYU’s chance at an upset depends on which Max Hall shows up to play quarterback. Will it be the one that threw seven touchdowns against UCLA, or the one who threw five interceptions against Utah? Starting out the game by giving Hall some short routes and easy completions would be a great help in getting his confidence up.
Running screen plays and five to ten yard routes would also help with the time of possession factor spoken of earlier.
4. Tackle well, the first time
This is pretty self explanatory. The best way to slow down a powerful offense is to eliminate missed tackles.
It is doubtful Oklahoma will overlook the Cougars. The stage is too big and they’ve already learned their lesson about good mid-major teams.
BYU will need to play a near perfect game to beat the Sooners, but this game is far more winnable than most people outside of Utah believe.
