Week 1 of the 2014 NFL regular season is finally upon us, and it’s time to decipher the latest injury reports and find out the status for the biggest names in football.

With top stars like Rob Gronkowski, Cam Newton and Bernard Pierce all dealing with injuries as the season begins, fantasy owners and football fans alike are looking for the status of their favorite players.

Here is the latest news, status updates and team-by-team inactives for the opening week of the season.

Rob Gronkowski, TE, New England Patriots

Status: Active

Gronkowski is one of the most talented offensive tight ends in the NFL, but he is coming off yet another serious knee injury. After missing all of the preseason, Gronk told Phil Perry of and Doug Kyed of about his Week 1 status:

Gronkowski was limited in practice on Wednesday, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald:

New England will be looking to acclimate their star tight end back into game shape, so fantasy owners and Patriots fans should ease their expectations. When Gronkowski plays Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, his snaps will be limited.

Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers

Status: Out

After suffering a rib injury during the preseason, Newton is out for Sunday's game, according to the Carolina Panthers official Twitter account:

Bernard Pierce, RB, Baltimore Ravens

Status: Active

With Ray Rice suspended, the Baltimore Ravens have been forced to lean heavily on backup running back Bernard Pierce, but he suffered a concussion during preseason action. According to Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun and Clifton Brown of Comcast SportsNet, he has already returned to practice and should play in Week 1:

Peirce is active. This is great news for fantasy owners and Ravens fans. Pierce will be a major contributor on the ground against the Cincinnati Bengals and likely will be a top target for QB Joe Flacco in the shot-yardage passing situations.

Sammy Watkins, WR, Buffalo Bills

Status: Active

After being selected fourth overall in the NFL draft, Watkins injured his ribs twice during the preseason, but he was listed as probable for Week 1 against the Chicago Bears. He is active.

According to Chris Brown of and Mike Rodak of, he returned to practice this week and was a full participant:

Watkins has the talent to be a top receiver in the league, but his quarterback E.J. Manuel has shown inconsistency with the deep pass. While the talent may be there, it will take time for Watkins to showcase his skill at the NFL level.
