Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine is already bracing himself for the absence of his best offensive playmaker, Josh Gordon.

Gordon was conspicuous by his absence against the St. Louis Rams on Saturday night. After appearing in the Browns' first two preseason games, the 23-year-old remained on the bench for Week 3.

"Knowing that the decision is looming, that we're fairly certain that we're not going to have him for at minimum some part of the year, we wanted to make sure that we were getting repetitions with the guys that were going to be out there early," said Pettine regarding the decision to leave Gordon off the field, per Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal.

The NFL has yet to issue a ruling after Gordon appealed his season-long suspension, which stems from a violation of the league's substance-abuse policy.
