In a battle of West Coast rivals, the San Francisco 49ers came out on top against the visiting San Diego Chargers, earning their first victory of the preseason and their first at Levi's Stadium by a score of 21-7.

Colin Kaepernick struggled against an aggressive Chargers defense and finished 6-of-12 with a sack and a lost fumble for San Francisco (1-2). Glenn Winston had eight carries for 58 yards and a score, and Vance McDonald had three catches for 29 yards and a touchdown.

Philip Rivers was 9-of-10 for 85 yards and a score for San Diego (1-2). His replacement, Brad Sorensen, was sacked twice and threw two interceptions against an equally tough 49ers defense.

Rivers led the Chargers on a 10-play, 71-yard drive in the first quarter and hooked up with Antonio Gates on a 10-yard score for the first points of the game but it was all San Francisco the rest of the way. After Kaepernick's exit, Blaine Gabbert led San Francisco on a late scoring drive to take a 10-7 lead at the break.

Phil Dawson nailed his second field goal of the game in the fourth quarter to make it 13-7 and Glenn Winston sealed the victory with a 27-yard TD run with 10:34 to go in the game. Three players were carted off with injuries: Kwame Geathers and Ricky Tjong-a-Tjoe for San Diego and Marcus Martin for San Francisco.
