Mike Krzyzewski has made his decision, and American basketball fans across the country now know which 12 players will lead the way for the red, white and blue at the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
SportsCenter provided an early look at the roster:
USA Basketball World Cup Roster announced: Rose, Curry, Irving, Thompson, DeRozan, Harden, Faried, Cousins, Davis, Gay, Drummond, Plumlee.— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) August 23, 2014
Perhaps just as important as the names on the list are the names left off it. Chandler Parsons, Damian Lillard, Kyle Korver and Gordon Hayward did not make the cut despite dressing for the squad in the early stages of the exhibition schedule.
To Lillard's credit, he did not seem to have any hard feelings, via Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports:
Blazers G Damian Lillard to Yahoo on not making @usabasketball : "It's nothing I did or didn't do. No hard feelings. Wish them the best."— Marc J. Spears (@SpearsNBAYahoo) August 23, 2014
Krzyzewski decided to keep a number of centers and power forwards in Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins, Kenneth Faried, Mason Plumlee and Andre Drummond, which means he likely has an eye on a potential showdown with Spain. Spain counts Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka on the roster, so the Americans will need some size to come away with a win.
Another major storyline is the presence of a healthy Derrick Rose, which is likely music to the ears of Chicago Bulls fans everywhere.
The exhibition schedule is almost over, and the Americans have their 12. Next up is a run at the World Cup title.
