Cincinnati needed a win. Bronson Arroyo needed a quality start. Both happened last night as the Reds blanked the Mets 3-0 at Citi Field.

Arroyo improved his record to 9-8 with the complete game shutout. He allowed just four hits, all singles. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. No Mets baserunner reached second base.

"He looked like he was in total control," said Joey Votto.

Votto was in control too, extending his hitting streak to 13 games with two more hits. The first of which came in the fourth inning to put the Reds on the board. It was Votto's 11th home run of the season.

The Reds added another run in the fourth, giving Arroyo a lead to work with.

Laynce Nix extended the lead to 3-0 with a blast into the second deck in the sixth inning. It was his eighth home run of the year.

The Reds and Mets play the second game of the series tonight. It will be Johnny Cueto (8-5, 3.45) against Johan Santana (9-7, 3.29).
