Liverpool have received a boost in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain forward Ezequiel Lavezzi. However, the door is seemingly ready to be slammed shut on the idea of signing Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus.
Here's the latest on transfer news concerning Liverpool:
PSG Will Sell Lavezzi to Fund Angel Di Maria Signing
Liverpool could profit from PSG's protracted pursuit of Real Madrid playmaker Angel Di Maria. It seems the Ligue 1 club will have to sell before buying Di Maria.
They claim the French champions want to raise money for a new Angel Di Maria bid but need Lavezzi to move to Liverpool in order to free up cash in their budget.
Lavezzi is unlikely to want to stay a club when he is not wanted—and it’s now up to Liverpool to agree a fee and close the transfer.
Lavezzi is an interesting potential signing for the Anfield club. He can play on either flank, as well as operate as a central striker.
Lavezzi is quick across the ground and times his runs well, qualities that would endear him to Rodgers, who favours a fluid passing game based on clever exchanges designed to release pacy movement.
The veteran Argentine would surely combine well with fleet-footed attackers Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling.
Borussia Dortmund Won't Sell Marco Reus
Lavezzi may be viewed as a smart alternative to a deal for Marco Reus. It seems the German international's club are unwilling to let him leave the Bundesliga this summer.
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc made that clear during an interview with Sport1, per Daily Express writer Anthony Chapman:
[We will] definitely try to keep him long term.
Marco is not only a hugely important player for us because of his athletic performance, but also in his role as a poster boy.
He is Dortmund-born and a figurehead for this club.
In all honesty, a move for Reus always seemed outlandish. There's no doubt he would fit seamlessly into Liverpool's quick-breaking attack.
Should Liverpool Give Up on Reus?
However, luring him away from Germany is a tall order for a club only just returning to the UEFA Champions League. It's perhaps also true that Rodgers' priorities may lie elsewhere.
He may well be more concerned with adding to his options at the back.
Liverpool 1 of 3 Clubs Chasing Lopez
After losing Pepe Reina to FC Bayern Munich, Rodgers needs an experienced stopper to provide cover behind Simon Mignolet. His latest target is Real Madrid's Diego Lopez.
The Reds are one of three interested teams, per Spanish publication El Confidencial (h/t Mirror reporter Alex Richards):
The Reds are locked in a three-way transfer tussle with AC Milan and Napoli for Real Madrid 'keeper Diego Lopez.
Lopez's future at the Santiago Bernabeu is in the air after the club added Costa Rica's Keylor Navas to their ranks, who will battle it out with club legend Iker Casillas for the No. 1 spot.
Often unfairly seen simply as the guy who is chosen over Iker Casillas in La Liga, Lopez is actually a highly capable 'keeper. He is a spectacular shot-stopper and exudes a smart authority in the box.
That's the kind of presence Liverpool need to keep Mignolet at a high level. The Belgian started his first season on Merseyside in terrific form. However, mistakes crept into the former Sunderland man's game toward the end of the campaign.
Mignolet won't be able to risk being so erratic with a stopper as experienced as Lopez behind him. The Spaniard has seen his share of Champions League action, dating back to his days with Villarreal.
At this stage, Liverpool ought to abandon hopes of landing Reus. Lavezzi is a shrewd alternative, while Rodgers needs to increase his efforts to land quality defenders.
