25 Early Predictions for Transfer Deadline Day
With the summer transfer window set to close on Monday 1 September at 11 p.m. BST, clubs are running out of time to finalise their deals for players.
Despite having a whole summer to bring in recruits, deadline day always sees a manic spree of signings being made in every division.
In addition to large-scale drama, false rumours and social media overload, the summer transfer window can promise at least one shock deal being completed that gets everybody talking.
In the summer of 2013, it was Arsenal’s £42.4m acquisition of former Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil that had everybody stunned, as per BBC Sport. There will certainly be another big-name shock arrival this time around too.
Many believe it could be Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, who will almost certainly be linked with both Manchester United and Arsenal before the transfer window closes.
But what other predictions can be made for transfer deadline day?
A Selection of Coveted Players Will Hand in Transfer Requests
Deadline day has become more and more feared by clubs looking to hold on to their prized possessions as agents can often get in the ear of a player and convince them to force a move elsewhere.
Ergo, transfer requests will be rife on the day. Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin is the one to look out for after seeing his previous transfer request rejected this summer, as per Samuel Stevens of The Independent.
Twitter Will Go into Meltdown
Due to the obsession of some characters wanting to be viewed as an “in the know” source for transfers, Twitter will go into meltdown with rumours flying around the social media.
Without caring to verify, supporters will retweet the news as if it's fact, leading many to believe the fabrication. Clubs will be contacted through their Twitter accounts, with supporters expressing their delight or despair depending on what players are linked with the side.
It's a similar situation with players, who often pitch in with their opinion on compatriots being linked with more sides.
Harry Redknapp Will Do an Interview from His Car
A man synonymous with deadline day is Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp. Due to his penchant for last-minute signings, he’s often courted by reporters when he’s in his car, and this summer should be no different.
Wesley Sneijder Will Be Linked with Manchester United
Galatasaray playmaker Wesley Sneijder has been linked with Manchester United for years, but no deal has ever materialised.
However, this summer, the rumours could well rear their ugly head again after the Netherlands midfielder hinted that he’d consider joining his former national team manager at his new club Manchester United, as reported by Luke Augustus of the Daily Mail.
Iker Casillas Will Be Rumoured to Leave on Loan
Following the arrival of goalkeeper Keylor Navas, Iker Casillas could be on his way out of Real Madrid. Well, that's what the tabloid newspapers will tell you on deadline day.
Arsenal were linked with him this summer, as per Sport (via Jamie Anderson of the Express), and there will certainly be another club being rumoured to sign the Spanish international on loan this summer.
The "Man City in Bid for Lionel Messi" Story Will Rear Its Ugly Head Again
It doesn’t matter how ludicrous a rumour sounds, somebody will always pick it up and run with it on deadline day. And as Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has such an astronomical release clause, the only club being deemed likely to sign was Manchester City, according to Anthony Chapman of the Express.
Expect the story to come up again on deadline day in some format, with Man City striker Sergio Aguero potentially linked to travel in the opposite direction as a makeweight to the deal.
Liverpool Will Miss out on a European Heavyweight
Liverpool have been linked with some big names in Europe in the last 12 months, but they have been either pipped to the post by another side or had their interest rebuffed by the player in question.
Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez chose Arsenal over Liverpool this summer, as per James Dickenson of the Express, and it’s a trend that may continue.
Unfortunately for them, this summer looks to be no different. On deadline day, expect them to be linked with the likes of Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus before the deal subsequently fizzles out.
Man Utd’s Shinji Kagawa Will Be Linked with a Part Exchange Deal Back to Dortmund
Despite the lack of action afforded to him at Manchester United last season, attacking midfielder Shinji Kagawa still remains at Old Trafford. The former Borussia Dortmund man featured in less than half of United’s league games in 2013/14, according to WhoScored.com, while failing to score.
So be prepared for rumours linking him back to his former side, with a Dortmund player being rumoured to be coming in the opposite direction. Reus’ name could pop up again, while defender Mats Hummels will certainly be linked as United step up their chase for a world-class defender.
Micah Richards Will Be Linked to Liverpool
With Manchester City having three first-team right-backs fighting for one place, and Liverpool having the underperforming Glen Johnson as their chief option in the defence, City’s Micah Richards will be linked with a move to Merseyside.
Richards made just two Premier League appearances for the Citizens last season, according to Transfermarkt.co, and has just 12 months left on his deal. Rumours surrounding his future will be rife on deadline day as a result.
Yaya Toure’s Agent Will Stir the Pot for a Bumper Deal
Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure looked to be forcing a move to Paris Saint-Germain this summer after throwing his toys out of the pram on two separate occasions for lapse birthday celebrations, as per Joe Mewis of the Mirror, and a lack of compassion for a dying family member, as he told France Football (via Adam Crafton of the Daily Mail).
But while the matters were eventually dealt with, expect his agent to use the PSG transfer rumours to secure the Ivorian a new lucrative contract at City this summer. The representative, Dimitry Seluk, has a reputation for such underhand methods to secure contracts, according to Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail.
Connor Wickham Rumours Will Intensify
Rumours have started to grow regarding the future of Sunderland striker Connor Wickham. The England international enjoyed a purple patch of form last season and is now being linked with a move to fierce rivals Newcastle, according to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail.
Expect deadline-day action on the proposed move, especially if the young striker starts the 2014/15 Premier League season well.
Alex Song Will Be Linked with a Return to Arsenal
With Barcelona midfielder Alex Song, a former Arsenal player, being on the periphery in Spain—and Arsenal’s apparent need for a talented central midfielder to proper the club to new heights—expect the Cameroon international to be linked with a return this summer.
There’s little truth in the rumours from the likes of Tom Hopkinson of the Mirror, but deadline day will see this non-starter story resurrected again.
Wilfried Bony Will Be Linked to Liverpool or Tottenham
With both Liverpool and Tottenham so far failing in their attempts to sign another striker, expect Swansea City’s Wilfried Bony to be linked with a move on deadline day.
Swansea manager Garry Monk has already issued a hands-off warning, as reported by the South Wales Evening Post (via Sky Sports), but the Ivorian striker will be a proposed target in various publications until the window officially closes.
Loic Remy Will Be Linked to Any Top Club Anywhere
Arsenal pulled out of the race to sign QPR striker Loic Remy this summer, as per the Sun (via Metro), while Liverpool then ended negotiations following a failed medical, according to Sky Sports, so expect the French striker to be linked with a host of clubs on deadline day.
QPR won’t mind keeping the talented forward, but such are his ambitions to play in European competition that a shock destination could make itself available on deadline day.
Falcao to Real Madrid Conspiracy Theories Will Emerge Again
Ever since Colombia striker Radamel Falcao joined AS Monaco, he’s been forever linked with a move to Real Madrid, and such rumours will emerge again on deadline day.
Real wanted the 28-year-old back in the summer of 2013, but selling club Atletico Madrid will seldom sell directly to a league rival, as reported by Simon Jones of the Daily Mail, which paved the way of rich French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco to sign him.
But Falcao continued to be linked to a move to Real just months after he joined AS Monaco, with Real president Florentino Perez suggesting a move could happen this summer on Spanish radio show Punto Pelota (via Sky Sports), and until the window shuts this summer, the former Porto man will be linked with the La Liga giants for a lucrative transfer fee.
Andy Carroll Will Be Linked with a Return to Newcastle
With Newcastle still in need of another striker, and West Ham target man Andy Carroll, formerly of the Magpies, having been criticised by the London club’s owners for his injury problems, as per The Telegraph, there could well be a rumour linking him with a return to Tyneside this summer.
The England international is reportedly a target for Newcastle, according to Alan Oliver of the Mirror, so expect this myth to run and run until deadline day.
Will Hughes Rumours to Intensify
Derby midfielder Will Hughes is likely to feature in the Rams' opening league games this season, so be prepared for rumours to emerge about his own future.
The England youngster was linked previously with Liverpool, as per Alan Nixon of the Mirror. Expect a new Premier League club to be tipped to sign him on deadline day if he performs well for Derby.
Javier Hernandez Will Be Shown the Exit Door
With Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal hinting that a number of players’ futures will be settled this summer, striker Javier Hernandez may be one shown the exit door, according to the Press Association (via The Guardian).
Expect the story to run until deadline day linking the Mexican international with every club in need of an attacker.
Victor Moses Will Be Subject of Loan Bid from Mediocre Side
With Victor Moses having a host of players ahead of him in the pecking order at Chelsea, the young winger will be subject to loan bids from Premier League sides that are consistent low- to mid-table finishers.
A permanent deal could well be on the cards too, as his future with the Blues appears sealed with Eden Hazard, Mohamed Salah, Andre Schurrle and Willian his direct competition for the place in the team.
Sky Sports Will Milk Jim White’s Deadline-Day Popularity to Embarrassing Heights
If last year wasn’t bad enough, get ready for Sky Sports to turn this summer’s deadline day into even more of a sideshow with presenter Jim White to be put on even more of a pedestal.
Deadline day has been called “Jim White Day” by football supporters, according to the Metro, and the man in question has been subject to spoof pictures and drinking games, via Facebook, as a result of his growing notoriety and catchphrases.
Paddy Power Will Own Twitter with Multitude of Topical Gags
Paddy Power has built up a reputation for not only delivering betting odds on the strangest of topics, but for the jokes posted on their Twitter account.
They will be busy on deadline day delivering punch lines about players being linked with clubs, as they did previously when former West Brom forward Peter Odemwingie drove to QPR’s ground Loftus Road to force a move.
Paddy Power posted a tweet somewhat jokingly, revealing the attacker’s next destination. Expect plenty more from them on deadline day this summer.
Arsenal Will Take Until the Dying Moments of Deadline Day to Sign Defender
With Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen being linked with a £10m move to Barcelona this summer, according to Pete O’Rourke of Sky Sports, the London club need an experienced replacement.
Due to them having signed Calum Chambers this summer, it’s likely manager Arsene Wenger will take his time with any more arrivals while hinting to the media that the club have enough depth in defensive areas to the fury of the Gunners supporters.
It could lead to the London club leaving it too late to sign a successor for the Barcelona-bound Vermaelen.
Nani Will Be Linked with Monaco
With AS Monaco having signed a host of Portuguese-based players in the last 12 months, expect Manchester United winger Nani to be linked on deadline day.
Monaco's sporting director told L'Equipe (via Adam Crafton of the Daily Mail), Nani was offered to the French Ligue 1 side previously, but that won’t stop the story from re-emerging in the coming weeks.
In-Form Championship Player to Be Linked with Newly Promoted Premier League Side
You can guarantee any Championship striker who starts the new season with a flurry of goals will be linked with a newly promoted Premier League outfit.
Deadline day always sees players in the second tier being linked with newly promoted outfits in the top flight, as it did with Blackburn striker Jordan Rhodes in 2013/14— with The Telegraph’s live deadline-day feed reporting interest from a selection of Premier League clubs.
Players Travelling to a City Will Be Linked with the Best Club from That Area
If any big-name player is seen travelling to a big city in another country on deadline day, there will be reports linking them with the biggest club from that area.
As previously reported by the Metro, Zenit winger Hulk was previously linked with a move to Chelsea after being pictured travelling to London in the middle of the January transfer window, with Twitter using the picture to fabricate rumours of the plane in question being Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s.
There will be plenty of that to come on deadline day.
