Coming off two straight wins at the British Open and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, world No. 1 Rory McIlroy could be the man to beat again at the PGA Championship.

Using eight birdies to help overcome a couple of tough holes, Rory carded a first-round 66, one shot behind leaders Lee Westwood, Kevin Chappell and Ryan Palmer.

McIlroy played in a featured group that included the year’s other major tournament winners. Masters champ Bubba Watson and U.S. Open winner Martin Kaymer both finished the day at one under par.

Defending champion Jason Dufner, who’s dealing with a neck injury that restricts his mobility, withdrew after a triple bogey at the 10th hole moved him to eight over par.

After arriving at Valhalla Golf Club on Wednesday and declaring himself pain-free, Tiger Woods played another middling round, recording a three-over 74. He’ll have to make up major ground on Friday if he hopes to play into the weekend.

Bad weather is making its way into the Louisville area and could disrupt the schedule of play for Round 2 on Friday.
