Real Madrid’s incoming Galacticos have been the centre of attention in the transfer window so far, but it’s a big-name star heading for the Bernabeu exit door who now enters the spotlight.
Winger Angel Di Maria’s future has come under endless speculation of late, with Europe’s top clubs all chasing his signature. However, it appears that Paris Saint-Germain have won the race.
As Hugo Tellez of Marca revealed, the Argentinian’s arrival in the French capital is imminent after PSG and Real Madrid agreed on a fee for the 26-year-old.
Said fee is reportedly €75 million plus an additional €5 million in add-ons, but the transfer isn’t quite as simple as that.
With PSG shelling out €40 million for David Luiz at the start of the summer, per BBC Sport, the club now risk UEFA sanctioning further financial disciplinary action against them if the Di Maria transfer goes through.
To steer clear of such punishment, PSG must offload players before the winger makes his move—giving his other suitors a little bit of optimism.
With such a star-studded outfit, just a sale or two by the Parisians will raise enough funds to allow the Di Maria transfer to go through, but star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic doesn’t seem to think that’s necessary.
The big Swede suggested that his side are already in winning shape without Di Maria in their ranks, but said that he has no say in the signing, per Nick Lustig of the Daily Star: "I don't know if we need Di Maria. We have a team that in recent months has won many trophies without him. It's not me who decides. It is better to talk to the manager, not me."
While Ibrahimovic loves being the big fish at Parc des Princes, having another alongside him won’t exactly tarnish his reputation.
As Di Maria proved during last season’s La Liga, he has an incredible eye for an assist, and with Ibrahimovic’s lust for goals apparent with every performance, the pair could make quite the team.
However, further doubt as to whether Di Maria will be meeting up with the Swedish star emerged on Tuesday, after the Argentinian took to Real Madrid training at Valdebebas, per ESPN’s Nicholas Rigg:
With his attendance comes newfound hope for Real Madrid fans wanting to see Di Maria in white next season, but it seems the inevitable is just being delayed.
Even so, PSG must act fast with their squad sales to finally bring the transfer saga to an end, as clubs waiting in the wings will jump at another chance for Di Maria’s signature.
