Manchester United Transfer News and Rumours Tracker: Week of August 4
Louis van Gaal's opening days in charge of Manchester United have shown great promise.
The Red Devils completed an undefeated pre-season tour of the USA, beating Liverpool 3-1 in the International Champions Cup final, on Monday.
United now return to England this week with the futures of many members of the playing staff in the balance.
Van Gaal addressed the press about this matter on Sunday, per Chris Wheeler of the Mail Online:
Now...it is a little bit soon to judge but in football you have to judge. You have to give the player a chance to make a transfer when I see that his prospects to play are not so high.
You have to say it in advance because it’s too late after August 31. I will tell players after the tour but to them—not to you.
So which individuals will the Dutch manager allow to leave and whom will he bring in for United's Premier League campaign?
Here we take a look at the latest transfer gossip surrounding one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Juventus Talks to Intensify as Vidal Agrees Huge Deal with United
Friday, August 8
Talks between Manchester United and Juventus over the price of Arturo Vidal are set to escalate, with the Chile international's agent agreeing a huge wage deal with the Red Devils.
Jack De Menezes of The Independent says that reports suggest the player's agent has agreed a £9.5 million per year wage deal with Louis van Gaal's club and that United will now try and agree a transfer fee with the Italians—more than likely breaking their own transfer record.
Vidal is currently on Juve's pre-season tour, with the Old Lady willing to do business at £47 million—if United come up with the money, per De Menezes.
De Menezes speculates that United's own form could be a contributing factor in the move as the team showed signs of recovery during their tour of the USA, making them more enticing to prospective signings.
United to Offer £15 Million for Thomas Vermaelen
Thursday, August 7
Manchester United are prepared to gazump Barcelona in their quest to sign Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.
Joe Bernstein of the Mail Online reports that the Red Devils will table a bid of £15 million to capture the Belgian defender.
Bernstein explains that Louis van Gaal is anxious to make new signings and that United have informed the Gunners that they will better the Spanish giants' bid for the player.
Vermaelen is one of United's top defensive targets and the club needs to strengthen in this department after the losses of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Louis Van Gaal Hints at Juan Cuadrado Bid
Wednesday, August 6
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hinted at a move for Colombian talent Juan Cuadrado after mentioning his name to journalists.
The London Evening Standard reports that when asked about the player, Van Gaal said:
"I cannot talk about Cuadrado, because if I say something about him the price will rise."
And Cuadrado himself was recently coy over a possible move, per London Evening Standard.
I don’t know yet what will happen. At this moment I haven’t received any concrete offers from any club. You read a lot of things in the press, but at the moment there is nothing concrete. I’m not in a hurry to decide my future. We’ll see what happens. Wherever I play I will try to give my best in every match.
Cuadrado would be perfect for LvG's 5-3-2 system, with the wide player being adept at playing as a wing-back on either side of the pitch.
His ability to make assists is well known and his arrival could see the exit of Nani, who's place in the squad would be redundant.
Everton to Move for Tom Cleverley
Tuesday, August 5
Everton will test the resolve of Manchester United to hold on to England international Tom Cleverley, with a bid for the player.
Simon Jones of the Mail Online writes that Roberto Martinez will bid £8 million for the 24-year-old midfielder as Louis van Gaal looks to trim his squad for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
Cleverley has featured prominently in United's tour of the USA and recently captained the team for the first-time.
But the Red Devils are still light on conventional midfielders and a move by the Toffees could be rejected for this reason.
Miranda Turns Down Manchester United
Monday, August 4
Marca, via Vaishali Bhardwaj of the Metro, claims the 29-year-old Brazilian defender was approached by the Red Devils after it seemed the Spanish champions were prepared to sell.
However, the player has chosen to remain in La Liga with Diego Simeone's team, dashing United's hopes of securing his signature.
Miranda was sensational for the Madrid club last season but was inexplicably excluded from Brazil's squad for the World Cup by Luiz Felipe Scolari—a costly error of judgement from the coach.
United's centre-backs have performed well during the team's pre-season tour of the USA, but Louis van Gaal will surely want to add experience to his back line.
Thomas Vermaelen Turns Down Arsenal Contract Talks
Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen appears to have played his last game for his club after he rejected the chance to discuss a new contract with the Gunners.
However, Arsenal are reluctant to allow the player to join another Premier League team and would prefer him to leave England. According to Mokbel, the north London club turned down a "£7 million enquiry" from the Red Devils earlier in the summer.
With the Catalan giants in the picture, it will be difficult for Louis van Gaal to convince Arsene Wenger to let the player join his new-look United setup.
