Jeff Gordon will be going for his fifth win at Watkins Glen, but his first since 2001, after winning the pole during qualifying Saturday for the Cheez-It 355.
Gordon established a track record with a speed of 129.466 mph on the 2.45-mile road course in upstate New York, edging out Marcos Ambrose for first place. Jimmie Johnson will start third on Sunday, while the fourth position is where Ryan Newman will begin.
The pole is the 75th of Gordon's career, but his first this year. This season, he's atop the Sprint Cup points standings, holding a 17-point lead over Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt will start Sunday's race in seventh position.
