WWE Divas champion AJ Lee suffered a whiplash injury after a fall on the August 2 edition of SmackDown and was taken off on a stretcher.

Lee, who had just returned to WWE programming and recaptured her title from Paige, was celebrating a victory over Rosa Mendes when the former champ threw her off of the SmackDown stage.

WWE physician, Dr. Chris Amann, explained the decision to immobilize Lee and send her for additional testing, via WWE.com:

"AJ was initially not responding when we got to her. As a precautionary measure, we put her in a neck brace, put her on a backboard and escorted her to a local medical facility for follow-up testing. There, she was diagnosed with a whiplash injury.”

With the SummerSlam pay-per-view on the horizon, Lee is a critical cog in the buildup as the feud continues with Paige.

The company has done a great job of running multiple Diva storylines at once—with Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella on a collision course for the pay-per-view, too—but the Lee-Paige feud is in the top slot.

Not only is Lee one of the best talkers on the mic and technicians in the ring, Paige is slowing coming around in both areas and needs a high-profile feud for experience to better build a foundation for the future of the division.

For now, the buildup between the two and for the division as a whole is on a slight hiatus as Lee nurses back to health.
