The Daily Telegraph struggle to keep up with the transfer window

The Daily Telegraph’s football coverage has for a long time now been struggling to keep up with the likes of The Times and The Guardian. This was highlighted by Patrick Barclay’s defection to The Times and more than ever the Telegraph seem to be a little slow on the uptake compared to their rivals.

This has been highlighted again this morning in a piece by Rory Smith who offers “Top 50 alternative European transfer targets,” in order to help out Premier League clubs looking for new recruits.

Of course, with such an extensive list mistakes can be made but Smith and the Telegraph had plenty of time to do some fact checking.

Smith highlights:

19. Eljero Elia (FC Twente): £6m
Ideal for: Tottenham, West Ham United
Rejuvenated under Steve McClaren at Twente, Elia picked up the prestigious Dutch football talent of the year award for his pacey virtuoso displays this season.

27. Javier Pastore (Atletico Huracan): £10m
Ideal for: Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool
The unlikely star of the Argentine championship, the attacking midfielder has been overlooked thus far by Diego Maradona but is seen as the brightest prospect in Argentina.

48. Oguchi Onyewu (Standard Liege): £3m
Ideal for: Birmingham, Wolves, Stoke
The US international impressed in the Confederations Cup after helping Standard to a second consecutive Belgian title.

Eljero Elia joined Hamburg three days ago, Palermo announced the signing of Javier Pastore yesterday and Oguchi Onyewu secured his move to AC Milan on Tuesday.

Poor, poor work from the Daily Telegraph.
