Cristiano Ronaldo and Fernando Torres. Two of the best players in the world, but who is the best?
I don't usually like comparing players with others and asking "whose better?" Especially when they play in different positions, but these two have set the Premier League alight this year, so I thought I'd make an exception for them.
As part of a very talented Manchester United side this season, Ronaldo has been the stand out performer among them all.
His fellow players obviously rate him very highly, as he has won the PFA Player of the Year award two years in a row now.
Last year I don't think he should have won it. This year, however, I think he deservedly retained his title.
- B/R Ticket Guide
Although Torres has been in sparkling form in his debut season in England, Ronaldo has established himself as one of the best in the world.
Ronaldo reached 40 goals for the season on Saturday, an outstanding feat for any player. I'm not going to say "40 goals for a winger" because he has not been playing wing for United. He has had an almost completely free role which has worked out better than anyone could have imagined.
Torres' 32 goals this season is certainly not a bad total either, especially as he has played less games. He has also broken long standing Liverpool records, such as scoring in seven straight home games, a record he has now extended to eight.
Overall, I think that Torres is more important to Liverpool than Ronaldo is to Man Utd. But who is the best player? At the moment it has to be Ronaldo.
Torres is key to Liverpool, as has been stated on numerous occasions when he has been left out of the starting line up. However, if Liverpool can buy themselves another quality striker, I'm thinking the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, then I think Torres would shine even brighter.
Although, saying that, when Torres has had four years experience in England like Ronaldo has, he may just be better than Ronaldo is now.
But for now, Ronaldo is the best in England. Not the world. Just England.

Oh this is gonna be controversial. They are the best articles though.
I mean if we are comparing Ronaldo and Torres, then we are basically talking about pure goalscoring ability because there are other players who are at the same level but dont score as often eg. Gerrard, Fabregas, Terry etc.
Goalscoring-wise obviously Ronaldo is on top as the stats show, 40 goals for a player who, whether in a free role or not, is more winger than striker. I think Ronaldo has a better all round game and can score goals in many different ways(free kicks, penalties) and helps out Rooney and Tevez by drawing defenders wide.
Liverpool fans will have a credible arguement in that Torres turns up to the big games and you have to agree with that. He has come to their rescue many times and although trophy-less this season, Torres alone looked as if he would drive them to trophies. 32 goals in his first season is immense, especially so young as he is too. He looked natural in the league and Champions league.
As for Ronaldo not being the best in the world, why not? THIS YEAR I think he is, now maybe over a time of 3-4 years you could say 'well Kaka was better over that space of time' or whoever, but this year he has been the best in my opinion.
Either way, if you enjoy football, you should enjoy watching both these players. So sit back and enjoy watching Ronaldo AND Torres.

i reckon messi is better than ronaldo and that messi's the best in the world. And im pretty sure i explained that i was making an exception for these two players, just coz i don't like comparing players who play in a different positions coz its hard to compare them, it doesnt mean im never gonna do it. If you think its pointless, dont read it and keep your opinion to yourself for once
from 8 months ago
Nope because the comparison is completely pointless and tired. How many times has this question been raised? You might not have noticed since (i think) you havent been here that long. But oh well....
For arguments sake, I find Ronaldo the better player.....
from 8 months ago
i didn't know there had been loads on this. But i still think its a good argument to have, after all these were the 2 top contenders for PFA player of the year so its also a discussion about who you would have chosen for that

Ummm Ronaldo all the Way!!!!!!!!

i've said this before, but Ronaldo has at least 5 goals off of penalties. Torres has none. With Torres playing less than Ronaldo and with him not being liverpool's penalty factor, it makes the race even closer. But I think Ronaldo edges him out slightly
from 8 months ago
Good point John. But Ronaldo edges it this season, he has been amazing. And take it from me, if it wasnt for Ronaldo's season, then Torres would be the highlight. He has been amazing.
Its true, Ronaldo has 5 goals from penalties, but you stil have to stick um. And if they are giving him stick over the missed penalty in Barca then you have to give credit for the ones he stuck in the net, simple as that. You win some, you lose some.

DID YOU JUST HAVE A MAJOR BARNEY MOMENT?
a major barney moment? whats that?! and i reckon he is, take torres out the team and youre left without a world class striker, take ronaldo out the team youve still got nani giggs and park
from 8 months ago
To compare Ronaldo with a foolish nani, an old giggs and a hard working run of the mill player is a bit dubious I'd say.
As for the penalties, they are goals and can't be disputed.
Without Ronaldo, Chelsea would be champions already.
from 8 months ago
i wasnt comparing ronaldo to them - hes in a different league altogether, but if he was left out the side they have 3 good players - one who we know can win titles in giggs, one who looks like a great prospect in nani and park who will always create problems. take torres out and you have one good replacement - crouch. voronin is distincly average and kuyt hasn't done well up front for us

I think both of these guys are really important to their teams. Man U has more depth though. Goals are goals even if they're penalties, but it does raise the "what if...?"

i dont say whos the best in the world coz im not asking whos the best in the world, im asking whos better out of those two.

I think Ronaldo is the best player in the world and better then Torres beacuse ronaldo has won the player of the yaer award and another one by the writers and plus 40 goals this eason and what torres won not even the barclays primership award so i say RONALDO all the wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
from 8 months ago
What is it with these idiotic comments.. Torres has NOT had a FULL SEASON in the premiership yet....

At the end of a season, when all the "Team of the Season" crap is being decided, a player is picked to join the team by how well he has performed in his "position." Ronaldo has been in a lot of these Team of the Years even though he has only produced 6 assists this season. A pretty poor output for a winger. When Ronaldo admits that he is playing as a striker then he will definently be the better player, but until then FT9 all the way.

why not say what if ronaldo was jsut a striker ....what if ... IF he was to be handed the ball !!! liek a torres ......its retarted to comapre a torres that has a fixed possition to a guy that works hard at every role he plays and thatz why RONALDO is the best ! his all round game is unlike anyone so dont come here and compare ronaldo to a torres or anyone lets face hes every and more cuz hes a torres he's a ballack in the air, he's a beckam, and hes a zidane on pks!
etc etc etc

Whatever the messi talks....ronaldo plays football from a different plant and u were wrong to bring torres in the cue so fast.

I think that Torres is better due to his amazing performance in his DEBUT season. There really are not many foreign stikers that slip straight into english football so smoothly, and score so many goals. If only Rafa had played him more to begin with and his goal tally was higher, then maybe some people would agree with me. Ronaldo's football skills are undoubtedly the best in the world (kills me to say that ;) ) but he has had so much time to play with his squad and fit into his role. Torres managed this in just one year, now that to me show pure talent. I guess it really is a hard call and quite unfair to say one is better than the other, but for me it's Torres, but I guess that's because i'm a liverpool fan! (and i dislike Ronaldo because he is cock sure and everyone seems to forget the world cup) Don't be to harsh about my comments...I'm a girl!! x
from 7 months ago
you're a girl sweetheart but if you place comments here you have to be prepared for them to be questioned! lol nobody has forgotten the world cup, people just move on. If you knew the facts about what happened immediately after that England game then maybe you wouldn't have written such foolish comments. Ronaldo, Rooney and Ferdinand had all spoke through text messages and calls while on their respective coaches and Rooney said himself that he understands that emotions were high...it was a vital world cup game of course for both teams not just England. And Rooney also said he didn't have any bad feeling towards Ronaldo and he probably would have done the same thing if a Portugal player had stamped on an England man. So these things happen but of course because Ronaldo is seemingly the sole factor in Rooney being sent off then he is villified in the same way Beckham was in '98. Rooney was no innocent bystander that day and the professionalism shows through in the way they play together today. Ronaldo is cocksure and everyone hates it but I remember another certain Portuguese "special one" with the same type of attitude and everyone thought the sun shone out of his ass.
People only hate Ronaldo's arrogance because they know he has every right to be arrogant...he's the best player on the planet!
Ronaldo is great but a lot of Ronaldo is hype. Torres is very good and goes less noticed. I think Torres may be slightly better because he is far more professional than Ronaldo (By that i mean he actually plays football and dosn't dive like Ronaldo).
from 7 months ago
enough of the diving claims already! Most players take a dive when contact is made. It's only because Ronaldo had that stigma in his first season here that everyone labels him a diver. you watch any game in the entire league and tell me Ronaldo is the only player who dives. and in actual fact I can remember Liverpool vs Chelsea in the champions league and Torres took a few dives then so people should stop labelling Ronaldo for something that happens in every single game.

I have to put my opinion in here and it's just my opinion...before I get plenty of hate comments!
Ronaldo is without a shadow of a doubt the best player on the planet at this point in time. The pundits recognise it....his peers recognise it, most managers recognise it. Yes Torres has had an unbelievable debut season but you can't compare these two until Torres has had a full season....that much I will agree with other comments. Having said that, everyone seems to be cooing about Torres and his UNREAL debut season.....just because he's had such a great season, who's to say he'll be just as good next season? some players come to this league and play well for the honeymoon period when they are enjoying their football and excited to be in a new league and then the following season when things dont go as well, they fade away into the background and become just another player. personally I think Torres is too good a player for that to happen but you can't get ahead of yourself and think that he's going to be this good every year. What happens if Rafa is dismissed in the summer? what happens if several of the players whom Torres has gotten used to playing with are sold and new players brought in? all these factors have to be taken into account and witnessed until you can say a player is great. Ronaldo has gotten better and better every season...maybe 42 goals is his peak who knows? it will be a mammoth task to better that next season but as far as I am concerned there is nobody better in the world at the moment. Torres should win a "best newcomer" award if there is such a thing.
