50 Burning Questions for the Final Month of the Summer Transfer Window
As we head into the final month of the transfer window, there are still plenty of questions to be answered and undoubtedly a few more surprises in store.
We've seen the likes of Luis Suarez, Alexis Sanchez, James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos swap clubs over the past few weeks, but which other players will we see making switches before the month is out? And which clubs will be the most active in the market?
Here, we ask 50 burning questions that are yet to be answered.
Will Angel Di Maria Be Won Over?
Seemingly being squeezed out at Real Madrid, Angel Di Maria's next move seems to depend on just who can win him over with an acceptable financial package.
Paris Saint-Germain appear to have gotten themselves to the front of the queue to sign the talented Argentinian, at least per Ben Burrows of the Daily Mirror, but there is likely to be a little way to go in one of the sagas of the summer.
Will Arsenal Sign Their Mikel Arteta Upgrade?
Arsene Wenger has done well to reinforce in two of the three areas he needed to this summer—right-back and up front—and so, just the centre of midfield remains.
Mikel Arteta is a fine player but not one who should be starting every game for Arsenal, and after being overrun in the centre on a few occasions last season, this seems to be a key area for the Gunners.
Will Marouane Fellaini End His Manchester United Misery?
In many ways the symbol of the below-par season that Manchester United had last year under David Moyes, Marouane Fellaini has now apparently agreed a switch to Serie A side Napoli, according to Gary Jones of the Daily Star, citing reports in Italy.
United are thought to be holding out for a bigger fee for their misfit, but they will most likely be happy with whatever they get.
Who Will Liverpool's New Forward Be?
After the collapse of the £8.5 million move for Loic Remy due to the Frenchman's failed medical, Liverpool have been left short in attack as they plan for life without Luis Suarez.
Speaking to reporters (h/t the Daily Mail), Brendan Rodgers has promised to take his time in the hunt for a new forward, but it remains to be seen just who the Reds will target and if they can get the deal over the line during what has been a hugely busy summer for them.
Belgian striker Divock Origi joined this summer, but he won't feature for the Reds this season after being loaned straight back to Lille.
Will Mario Balotelli Make a Move?
Always a popular name with media outlets, Mario Balotelli saw himself linked with Arsenal for much of this transfer window, as per Italian paper Tuttosport (via Metro).
Whether he does leave the city of Milan behind for a second time remains to be seen, but it wouldn't be surprising to see his name popping up in the gossip columns in the weeks to come.
Will Southampton Sell Anybody Else?
After spending the summer waving off their brightest talents as they depart for pastures new, Southampton supporters must be wondering if any of their other stars will be leaving the club this summer.
Jay Rodriguez has been linked with a move to Liverpool by Bruce Archer of the Daily Star, while both he and Morgan Schneiderlin have been the subject of public interest from Tottenham, as reported by BBC Sport. But surely, the Saints have to stop the sales soon?
Are Any More 'Over-the-Hill' Players Going to Join Aston Villa?
After bringing in Joe Cole, Philippe Senderos and Kieran Richardson, Aston Villa's summer recruitment has largely been based around signing players who are a little long in the tooth. So will they sign any more?
The bad news for Villa fans is that Simon Jones of the Daily Mail has linked them with Nicklas Bendtner...
Will Barcelona Strengthen Their Defence?
The signing of Jeremy Mathieu has been seen by many as the addition to Barcelona's defence that the club have needed for some time, but given last season's problems, could they strengthen their back line even further?
Thomas Vermaelen has been linked with a switch to the Nou Camp by The Sun (via the Daily Mirror) as he continues to struggle to break into the Arsenal side, and the Belgian could well be targeted by new boss Luis Enrique as he continues his shakeup.
Will Isco Leave Real Madrid?
New arrivals at Real Madrid have made Isco's position at the club become somewhat fraught, and the Spanish international has now been linked with a move to the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool by Steve Millar of the Daily Star.
Perhaps Real would prefer a loan move as opposed to a straight transfer for the 22-year-old talent, who is certain to have plenty of admirers this summer.
Who Will Be West Ham's Andy Carroll Replacement?
For the third season running, an injury has completely ruined Andy Carroll's beginning to the campaign, with the West Ham forward now sidelined for up to four months after tearing ligaments in his ankle, as per BBC Sport.
What will Sam Allardyce do to replace Carroll? The Hammers boss is certain to be calling in favours from several of his contacts in the game in his bid to find a new forward.
Will Anyone Sign Arturo Vidal?
One of the longer-running sagas of this transfer window has centred around the future of Juventus and Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal, who has long been linked with a move to Manchester United, as seen here in a report by Ben Curtis of the Daily Mirror, citing reports in Italy.
Vidal is one of the hottest properties in Europe right now, and United will reportedly stop at nothing to get their man. They will be looking to fend off rival interest from Liverpool—who can offer Champions League football—as outlined in the Daily Star by Gary Jones, who cites Chilean newspaper El Mercurio.
Will West Brom Sign the Players Joleon Lescott Wants?
Joleon Lescott had been a West Brom player for less than a month before Darren Lewis of the Daily Mirror reported that the former England man was unhappy at the standard of signings at The Hawthorns.
Since then, Alan Irvine has brought in the likes of Dynamo Kiev forward Brown Ideye and Liverpool youngster Andre Wisdom on loan, but is that enough for the ex-Manchester City centre-back?
Who Will Be the Answer to Liverpool's Left-Back Dilemma?
Much of the focus at Liverpool has been on who will come in to replace Suarez, but their left-back issues are just as important to Rodgers.
Having seen the likes of Alberto Moreno, via Chris Richards of the Daily Mirror, and Ryan Bertrand, via Dominic King of the Daily Mail, linked with moves to the club this summer, the Reds are still no closer to finding a player who can challenge the likes of Jon Flanagan, Jose Enrique and Jack Robinson for the first-team place.
Who Else Will Be Squeezed out at Arsenal?
The arrivals of Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers at Arsenal have heaped doubt on the futures of their current full-backs, with Carl Jenkinson the most obvious candidate to be let go by Arsene Wenger long before he completed his loan move to West Ham on Thursday.
Further forward, though, the likes of Lukas Podolski, Ryo Miyaichi and perhaps even Santi Cazorla are others who could be moved on down the line.
Will Anyone Take a Chance on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang?
Chelsea and Newcastle were regarded as suitors then, but six weeks later, could other clubs be looking at the 25-year-old Gabon international? He'd appear to suit the Premier League.
Where Does Radamel Falcao's Future Lie?
After missing out on the World Cup and seeing James Rodriguez shine without him, Colombia's Radamel Falcao has seen his name in gossip columns all summer as a potential move away from Monaco beckons.
Spanish paper AS (via Samuel Stevens of The Independent) have linked Falcao with a potential move to Real Madrid, who could take the prolific forward on loan for a season before making a permanent move in 2015.
Will Fabio Borini Say Yes to Sunderland?
After a £14 million fee was agreed for his services two weeks ago, Fabio Borini has seemingly stalled his move from Liverpool to Sunderland for as long as he can, even heading off to the Reds' pre-season tour of the USA and promptly injuring his shoulder.
Craig Hope of the Daily Mail now reports that the move could be edging closer to completion, although that is likely to depend on whether the Black Cats can offer the Italian what he wants.
Will Sami Khedira Move to the Premier League?
Although he missed the final through injury, Germany's Sami Khedira was crucial to his side's World Cup success in the summer, and the Real Madrid man has been tipped for a move to the Premier League pretty much ever since.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked to the midfielder by outlets such as the Daily Mail, but a long, drawn-out transfer process seems to have some legs in it yet.
Will Louis van Gaal Sign 1 of His Dutch World Cup Stars?
The likes of Daley Blind, according to Spanish reports (via the Daily Express), and Memphis Depay, as per the BBC's Mike Keegan (via Metro), have both seen their names appear next to that of Manchester United regarding transfer rumours this summer. But at this point in time, Louis van Gaal has yet to make a move for one of the Netherlands players he managed in the summer.
Of course, Van Gaal is a vastly experienced manager with several contacts in the game, but it would perhaps be a surprise were he to not snap up a player who would be so fresh in his mind.
Will Fernando Torres Call It a Day at Chelsea?
As with Romelu Lukaku, the arrivals of Diego Costa and Didier Drogba at Stamford Bridge aren't likely to have been well received by Fernando Torres, who is certainly going to have a battle on his hands to force his way into the Chelsea team.
Perhaps the time has come for the forward to end his time in England and return to Spain, although finding a buyer for him there could be difficult after former club Atletico Madrid signed Mario Mandzukic.
If Thibaut Courtois Is Chelsea's No. 1, Will Petr Cech Leave?
The Daily Mail's Simeon Gholam quotes Chelsea's Petr Cech claiming that he doesn't "want to be on the bench" following Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois' return to the club. If his younger rival does claim the No. 1 shirt, will the Czech depart Stamford Bridge?
In that same report, Jose Mourinho has claimed that all he wants to do is keep everyone happy, but surely, he is set for a very disappointed goalkeeper no matter what happens.
Which Manchester United Players Will Louis van Gaal Get Rid Of?
With Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera having been added to the Old Trafford ranks in deals that were seemingly set up before Van Gaal arrived, many are now waiting to see just whom the Dutchman will let go as he bids to make the squad his own.
The likes of Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley, Nani, Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling and more will all be eager to impress their new boss as they bid to avoid the chop.
Can Mats Hummels Be Prised from Borussia Dortmund?
Ben Burrows of the Daily Mirror reported on how Jurgen Klopp has reacted to the news that Mats Hummels could leave Borussia Dortmund for Manchester United, but Klopp will know that money talks in football.
Should United or Barcelona make a move for the Germany World Cup winner, Dortmund could find a huge deal hard to turn down, while the centre-back could also be tempted by the riches on offer elsewhere.
Will Bryan Ruiz's Good World Cup Earn Him a Move?
After impressing at the World Cup in the summer with Costa Rica, Fulham's Bryan Ruiz isn't likely to return to relegated Fulham having spent the latter half of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven.
Kyle Jones of Football League World reports a Daily Star Sunday story that claims that Ruiz is available for around £5 million, as Olympiakos and Besiktas register their interest in a player who scored twice in Brazil.
Will James Milner Get the Move He Wants?
Before the World Cup, Manchester City's James Milner indicated that he saw his future away from the club as he sought more first-team football.
Reports such as this one by Ian Herbert in The Independent surfaced as Milner was linked with both Arsenal and Liverpool, but things have gone quiet on the Englishman's future pretty much ever since, and it remains to be seen whether he'll get his move or not.
Will Dejan Lovren's Arrival Force Daniel Agger out of Liverpool?
Liverpool vice-captain Daniel Agger is a potential target for Barcelona, according to Spanish paper Sport (via John Drayton of the Daily Mail), as the arrival of Dejan Lovren at Anfield may force the Dane down the pecking order.
Agger's fitness problems have concerned Reds boss Rodgers in the past, and he could find the potential £12 million deal too good to turn down, with Kolo Toure also linked with a move away to the Middle East by the Daily Express.
Could Lucas Leiva Follow Suit After Emre Can Signing?
Similar to Agger, Brazilian Lucas Leiva is another of Liverpool's "old guard" who has been linked with a move away after the addition of a new player—in this instance, young midfielder Emre Can.
Earlier in July, the Daily Express' Ben Jefferson, citing reports in Italy, wrote that Lucas was a target for his former manager Rafael Benitez at Napoli, and it remains to be seen whether that interest is firmed up with a bid.
Will Jack Rodwell Return to Everton?
Now needing a move in order to revive a career that has almost completely stalled, Manchester City's Jack Rodwell has long been touted for a return to former club Everton.
David Anderson of the Daily Mirror wrote that Rodwell is a target for his former employers and West Bromwich Albion, but after featuring in City's pre-season, the future of a one-time promising England midfielder is unclear.
Are Bayern Munich Going to Allow Xherdan Shaqiri to Leave?
Switzerland's Xherdan Shaqiri has been linked with a move away from Bayern Munich all summer, with Liverpool one of the clubs believed to be interested in the 22-year-old attacking midfielder, as per Swiss newspaper Blick (via Ben Burrows of the Daily Mirror).
Shaqiri's future hasn't yet been determined, but with Bayern seemingly unwilling to allow him to leave on the cheap, he could end up staying on the fringes of Pep Guardiola's team.
Will Marco Reus Leave Borussia Dortmund?
In a similar story to our earlier slide on Hummels, it has been claimed that Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus could be interested in a move away from the club this summer, with Liverpool interested in a player who is also coveted by Bayern Munich, according to the Daily Mirror (via Samuel Stevens of The Independent).
Any deal for Reus is likely to be a hugely expensive one, although there is little doubt that the buying club would be getting a special player.
Will Paul Pogba Move to Chelsea?
One of the summer's longest-running rumours has seen midfielder Paul Pogba linked with a move to Chelsea, such as here by Simon Johnson of The Independent.
More recent reports, like those aggregated by Richard Arrowsmith of the Daily Mail, claim that Pogba is likely to stay at Juventus for at least another season, but that isn't likely to deter Chelsea from continuing their interest in one of Europe's finest young midfielders.
Will Luis Suarez's Arrival Lead to More Barcelona Departures?
Alexis Sanchez has already vacated his No. 9 shirt since Suarez arrived at Barcelona, but will even more players find themselves on the way out of the Nou Camp?
The likes of Pedro Rodriguez and midfielder Ibrahim Afellay could find themselves surplus to requirements once Suarez comes back from his ban to form a deadly trio with Lionel Messi and Neymar, and so, perhaps boss Luis Enrique could look to cash in.
Who Will Southampton Bring In?
Never mind the departures from Southampton; it is surely high time that the club target some more new arrivals for boss Ronald Koeman.
The likes of Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic have moved to St. Mary's already, although more players are needed, with Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar apparently targeted by fellow Dutchman Koeman, according to James Nursey in the Daily Mirror.
Nursey also claims that Koeman is targeting an ambitious £17 million move for Argentina's World Cup left-back Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon.
Will Wilfried Bony Leave Swansea?
Heavily linked with Liverpool earlier in the transfer window, as per BBC Sport, Swansea's Wilfried Bony could now find himself a target for the Anfield club again following the failure of their move for Loic Remy.
Bony scored 16 goals in his debut season with the Welsh side, but the Swans appear adamant that they want to keep him at all costs, meaning that he could have to force a move away should he want one.
What Happens to Loic Remy Now?
After failing his medical with Liverpool, surely other clubs will be wary of making a move for Queens Park Rangers forward Loic Remy?
The French international might find that he is forced to remain with his current side instead of making the switch away that he would have been targeting.
Where Does Pepe Reina's Future Lie?
Having returned to Liverpool following his loan spell at Napoli, Pepe Reina has taken a step into the unknown.
The Reds, of course, have Simon Mignolet on their books, and with all signs pointing to the Belgian again starting the new campaign as the No. 1 goalkeeper, Reina's future is as of yet an unknown. He has been something of a ghostly figure on the club's pre-season tour of the USA.
Who Else Will New York City FC Sign?
At the time of writing, New York City FC have two designated players in David Villa and Frank Lampard, while two other players are on their books in Josh Saunders and Jeb Brovsky.
That isn't enough to form a team, so it'll be interesting to see just who else the club can convince to come to the Big Apple between now and the new MLS season in 2015.
Will Inter Milan Pay Enough for Gary Medel?
As he proved during the World Cup, Chile's Gary Medel really deserves to play at a higher level than the Championship next season, despite Cardiff City's relegation.
Sky Sports' Nadia Carminati claims that Inter Milan have an interest in the tough tackler, but the question remains over whether the Italian giants can come up with the right financial package to sign him.
Which Forward Will Inter Bring In?
Since the arrival of president Erick Thohir, there has been much talk over which forward Inter could splash the cash on in a bid to provide competition to the likes of Rodrigo Palacio and Mauro Icardi. So far, a forward hasn't materialised.
Manchester United's Javier Hernandez has been linked with a move to Inter by David Kent of the Daily Mail, citing reports in Italy, and the Serie A giants could surely do worse.
Will Newcastle Sign Any More Frenchmen?
Emmanuel Riviere and Remy Cabella have moved to Newcastle this summer, joining fellow Frenchmen Moussa Sissoko, Hatem Ben Arfa, Yoan Gouffran, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Massadio Haidara and Gabriel Obertan at St James' Park.
Is there room for more? Alan Pardew will doubtless be looking for them.
Will Any More World Cup Goalscorers Earn Moves?
Ecuador's Enner Valencia scored three goals for his country at the World Cup in the summer, and he subsequently earned a move to West Ham United. Will any more of the tournament's hotshots earn a switch to England?
Another candidate is Algeria forward Islam Slimani, whom Simon Jones of the Daily Mail has linked with a switch to Premier League new boys Leicester City after scoring twice at the finals.
Where Will Victor Valdes End Up?
As an out-of-contract player, Victor Valdes will be free to join a club outside of the transfer window, but with Champions League squads to finalise, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him move this month even though he is still recovering from injury.
According to a report by John Drayton in the Daily Mail, the former Barcelona man has seen his supposed move to Monaco collapse this summer. But as a free transfer, he would surely represent a very educated gamble for an elite club.
Who Else Will Mauricio Pochettino Bring to Tottenham?
Despite the recent arrivals of Ben Davies and Michel Vorm, it has been something of a quiet first transfer window at Tottenham Hotspur for manager Mauricio Pochettino.
You have to suspect that will change at some point, and although he will have entered the club determined to get the most out of the several failures who played for Spurs last season, Pochettino will surely make his mark by bringing in more of his own players soon.
Will Anyone Stump Up the Cash for Edinson Cavani?
Having spent a season largely playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Paris Saint-Germain, Edinson Cavani could now strike out on his own and look to become the main man somewhere else.
Sky Sports reported that the Uruguayan has instructed his agent to pick out a move to the Premier League for him. The only stumbling block to his transfer must surely be affording the vast amounts undoubtedly needed for the talented forward.
Can Queens Park Rangers Convince Mathieu Valbuena to Sign?
Queens Park Rangers have never been shy to pay big money to players when they are in the Premier League, and after the arrivals of the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Steven Caulker, they are now looking to convince France World Cup star Mathieu Valbuena to join them from Marseille.
The Daily Star claims that talks are well underway to make Valbuena a Rangers player, but it remains to be seen whether he can be convinced to make the switch.
Have Stoke Got Another Surprise Up Their Sleeve?
A few years ago, the notion of Bojan Krkic playing for Stoke City would have been a laughable one, but Mark Hughes' side did well to pull off one of the more surprising transfer coups of the summer.
Following such an imaginative signing, you now have to wonder if Stoke could produce another surprise move.
Will Stephan El Shaarawy Really Stay at AC Milan?
Stephan El Shaarawy's brother and agent was reported to have played down interest from Real Madrid in his sibling/client, as per Radio Kiss Kiss (via Sky Sports), but it would be interesting to see what would happen should a move be made for the forward.
The Italian international has scored 18 goals for AC Milan in 2011, but with new boss Filippo Inzaghi facing a tough rebuilding job at the San Siro, he could be tempted by a move to pastures new.
Will Ravel Morrison Stay at West Ham?
According to talkSPORT (via Sky Sports) there is a difference in opinion between Allardyce and the West Ham board over the future of Ravel Morrison, the youngster who briefly sparkled last season before being shipped out on loan to Queens Park Rangers.
Morrison's talent is undoubted, and it will be interesting to see if a club considers making a move for him despite all of the stories about a supposed bad attitude and his trouble with the law, as per the Daily Mail.
Will PSG's Adrien Rabiot Move This Summer?
Juventus, Arsenal and Chelsea are all interested in Paris Saint-Germain's youngster Adrien Rabiot, as reported by talkSPORT, and the French midfielder could leave for a fee this summer or on a free transfer next year.
The 19-year-old appears to be reluctant to sign a new contract in the French capital, having failed to earn the regular football he craves, and PSG could look to force through a move imminently as they seek a fee for the teenager.
Who Will Monaco Bring In to Replace James Rodriguez?
James Rodriguez's move to Real Madrid has been hailed in the Spanish capital, but ahead of their return to the Champions League, who will Monaco bring in to replace the World Cup star?
Dimitar Berbatov has signed for the principality team, but new boss Leonardo Jardim will need a lot more than him as he plots to try to catch up to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.
