Meanwhile, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton somehow managed to make his way through the field to finish on the podium in third position, and this despite the fact that not only was the Briton forced to start the race in the pit lane, but he also spun his car on the opening lap too.

And in what were ever-changing weather conditions—the grand prix had started in heavy rain, before it soon stopped and the track began to dry out—the race soon came down to a straight fight between Alonso, Hamilton and Ricciardo with 10 laps remaining.
However, it was the Australian who took the spoils after finally getting past his Spanish rival with three laps to go, leaving Alonso to desperately hold off the Mercedes duo of Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in what was a thrilling finale at the Hungaroring.
